Despite the case being almost three decades old, most people do not know the details of the crime and aftermath (Murder of Pamela Smart‘s husband Greggory Smart). This is a shame. It is one of the most important legal cases in decades, but the media either refuses or does not understand this case. It is true that criminals will lie. It is also true that criminals will tell the truth. Criminals will only say what will make them look big, mean and tough.. There were four boys (and one girl) involved in this murder. The girl (7/Cecilia Pierce), leader (9/Raymond Fowler) and shooter (8/Patrick "Pete" Randall) kept their mouths shut. The Rapist (6/William "Billy" Flynn) and (10/Vance "J.R." Lattime) whom I will call The Creep bragged. The Rapist would tell friends that the widow seduced him to kill her husband because he is big and tough and could get the job done. The Creep bragged openly that he was paid by the widow to kill her husband because he is big and tough and can get the job done. He never met the widow and was in the car. To understand this person, think of the creepy guy at high school. That's him. Think of the type of guy that a crack whore, desperate for a fix, would turn down. Like all heater cases this had a hot line. People reported the bragging of these two characters. Now the police believed that the widow caused her husband's death. Despite the evidence against it, the police never wavered in their belief. They knew many of these teens had spent time behind bars, but still believed that they were innocent until seduced by the widow. A few days after the murder, the gang recovered enough to go back to doing what they do best - robbing warehouses filled with electronic items. They needed extra people, so they brought along (14) and told him about the murders. (14) informed the police. Since (14) was not part of the planning and cover up, there was much he did not know. The police did not believe him at first. Then the leader of the gang went to the police and sang like a canary, The only problem was the gang leader insisted it was planned as a burglary, and the husband came in at the wrong time. While the older gay lover (the shooter) carried the firearm into the car and excitedly talked about how much fun it was to kill a man, the gang leader had to admit he did not see the shooting and could not confirm who did the shooting. The next step was to talk to the rapist (6). This was not the first time he was in the prison system. He knew the rules, Don't lie to the detective, don't argue with him, and agree with everything he says. The rapist was surprised that he was not charged with rape. The police gave him a better alibi- She seduced him! The detective said that the widow seduced him into killing her husband. The rapist agreed. Only big tough guys are asked to kill someone. The detective never asked if the rapist gay lover shot the husband. This made the rapist a stand up guy who did not squeal. The rapist would have to serve a few years in the juvenile system. He did not mind. Like all criminals, he found prison to be more fun than school. Best of all he would get away from all the annoying women in his life. In a few years, he would be released. and his criminal record erased. While the state saw the rapist as a man of integrity and respect, they knew the general public would despise him for being the criminal he was. For the state, they needed more to convict the widow. It exposed the true story of one of the most the famous crimes (Tate/LaBianca murders) of the latter half of the twentieth century. The author (Tom O'Neill) had done meticulous research and worked on this for twenty years. Much of the popular narrative of this case is untrue. At first, the book, which received positive reviews, didn't get much publicity but then the author appeared recently on this very popular interview program ("Joe Rogan Experience") which is not on TV. After that, its popularity very much increased.
Some of the fall out....
1.) A behind the scenes review by the city (Los Angeles) where this all happened has commenced. It is a review of some of the other cases prosecuted by the deceased well known legal figure (Vincent Bugliosi/Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office). He is exposed in the book as a corrupt mentally unstable thug who may have acted on the orders of someone else. His personal behavior may have been used to blackmail him.
2.) A number of would be investigators are starting to look at the connection between this secret program and other famous crimes (violence at schools in particular). In the book, a connection is shown between the program and the infamous deceased A+ figure (Vincent Bugliosi/Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office).
3.) The male half of the second victims (Leno and Rosemary LaBianca) had embezzled $200,000 from his family business and had gambling debts. The first group of victims (Abigail Folger/Wojciech Frykowski/Steven Parent/Jay Sebring/Sharon Tate) had earned the wrath of drug dealing types connected to a powerful organization (Mafia). The book challenges the motivation (but not who did it) for these crimes - Were these in fact contract killings? These facts provide backing for this.

During the course of researching this book, he came across evidence of involvement by this three initial organization (CIA) and the same program (Project MKUltra) in the murder of this dynastic public figure (Assassination of Robert F. Earlier that evening, the bar had been full for Mardi Gras. The last thing I remember is that convo and then walking out back for a smoke by myself. The next morning, I woke up in my own bed, naked, my hair full of my own vomit and him next to me with a bloody face. Some friends showed up to get him and I started to walk down to the bar to get my car and figure out what happened. As I walked down the hill from my house my phone started going off with voice mail notifications. I listened to them all and they were all from this guys wife, who was threatening to find me and kill me. Once I heard her voice, I remembered she’d shown up at my door the previous night after she heard he was there and he told her to go home, which she did, but only after an hour of throwing patio furniture at my front door (according to a neighbor). I lived in a pretty remote spot and had no idea how I’d even made it home (I didn't know these guys) until the wife emailed me a few days later, scolding me for being wasted and allowing myself to be "fucked by a stranger covered in blood". Apparently, they’d had a fight and she left him and went to a hotel. He went out drinking. When I passed out at the bar, the bartender, who lived on their property, threw me in his car until he got off work. That’s when I puked on myself and in his car. After his shift, he and the rock star hopped in the car. He dropped off the rockstar at home, just down the street from me. He then drove around trying to get me home but I could not speak clearly enough to tell him. In the meantime, rockstar gets on his 4 wheeler to go for a joy ride. The wife sees this from the home cameras she’s monitoring on her phone from the hotel. When he doesn’t return, she gets nervous - knowing how heavily he drinks - and she decides to drive back to town that night. I’m still in the bartenders car. The rock star, sure enough, drives his 4 wheeler off the road, but had jumped off of it, landing in the middle of the road. He was picked up by someone who was driving by. That car passed the bartenders car and they all stopped to chat. The driver of the other car looked in and saw me and it turned out he knew my neighbor and knew exactly where I lived. So, they all got in the car, drove to my house and the rockstar stayed there with me. I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen the totaled 4 wheeler crashed into the brush and the blood in the middle of the street on my walk down to get my car the next morning. The wife continued to stalk me for months on my cell and on social media. I’m also a musician and at the end of one of her emails she suggested I "write a song about how I ruin other people’s lives". So, I wrote an over the top passive-aggressive country EP based on it. There wasn’t much else I could do about it. The bar was owned by their good friends and the only people who saw anything were also their friends. I tried to get a restraining order, as she knew where my gigs would be and where I worked and continually threatened to come find me. She never did anything and I never heard from her again after I released the album. She gave me the old "no one will listen to your music and you’ll be chased out of the canyon and no one will like you for this" but I stayed for 4 years and played every local festival and venue, including the songs I’d written about this fiasco.

One of my favorite things to do though was watch who was buying gifts for someone and whether this was a new relationship, old relationship, or something that shouldn't ever be discovered. I have told you about the special dressing room that was used as a "thank you" spot for an expensive gift. It had a chaise lounge in it and was probably not something you would want any bit of your naked body to touch. The list of young actresses who became A list or D list who have been on that lounge is too numerous to count. With the store closed though, where would the new spot be. Where is the new spot. He was a guest at an event for fans of said franchise and I was tasked with keeping an eye on the autograph lines for this actor and another guest. Along with the other guests at the event, the actor was doing photo op sessions with fans. These sessions are one shot deals - you pay for them and had best be there or you’ve blown your money. It just so happened that an attendee had a photo op with the two most well known guests, one (Carrie Fisher) of whom is now deceased and the other (Mark Hamill) is still around, which conflicted with his photo op with the first guest. Naturally, he went for the photo op with the two. The attendee had a personal item which he had all guests there sign for him which he wanted included in his photos of him with the guests. Part of my job of managing the lines was to be the guy who told guests they couldn’t take photos at the guest’s table, but this actor seemed friendly and I figured he might accommodate the attendee’s wish of a shared photo with the guest, so I went ahead and asked, expecting to get shot down citing agreements and such. The thing is, a lot of these tutors are not real. They are using the names of actual on set tutors, but are not related to the shows at all. The 80's themed kids show is being name dropped by 20-30 people pretending to be tutors from that show and also trying to convince parents that in addition to tutoring, they will help your son or daughter make connections to land them a role.
