same
last name as an iconic foreign-born singer. He's also an extremely nice
and
modest person. No final word on a director yet, but I'm talking with a
former
classmate from college times - someone who has made an appearance in
one
of these blinds. She's the daughter of a permanent A list musician, and
a
talent in her own right. (Even if she doesn't direct it, she may do
something
else - she's a cinematographer and editor too.) It's funny because back
then
her short was up against this one I was in. As it happens, it was a
mock

other
countries for work. Much like the kindergarten aged jockeys of days
gone
by that were kidnapped or sold from their home countries and used,
abused,
raped and murdered by their captors, there is a new group operating in

same countries. These are generally tweens and generally, but not
always
female. They are unique. They are all orphans. There is no one asking
for
them. There will be no questions ever asked unless one of the
orphanages

to the person running the orphanage because they have paid off someone

the government to get documents for these tweens to leave the country.
What
brought all of this to light was a former bodyguard of this A list
celebrity.
He was there one night when his employer had one of these tweens
dropped
off at the top three floor penthouse suite of the celebrity. The
bodyguard
was told the tween was fresh off the plane two days earlier from her
home
country and now she was in a new country. She wouldn't be going back
and
by the morning she was dead. The A list celebrity, who is no stranger
to
violence apparently raped her and beat her until she was dead. He left
her
lifeless body on the bed which is where the bodyguard saw it the next
morning
when the same service that dropped off the tween, picked her up. The
bodyguard
is in hiding. He wasn't supposed to see what he saw. Several people saw
the
tween show up, but only the bodyguard saw what he saw the next morning.
He
was searching everywhere for some sunglasses he had bought a day
earlier.
Even though he had been told to stay out of that suite, he went in to
look.
The celebrity knows he knows. The bodyguard felt it was better to not
get
on that plane back home, so he skipped out of the hotel and hid in the
city
until the celebrity was out of the country. Our bodyguard went to a

country where he has some family and that is where he remains.

These days on realty shows, you see a flurry of people enlisted to get
the
talent together. There are glam squads, masseuses, interns, assistants,
managers,
social media teams, ghost writers and so much more. Last night I had
the
opportunity to see a schedule for one reality TV personality’s team
member whose role sounds a lot like a personal slave. I can only
imagine
all the tea this person has on a certain "lady of the manor who
apparently
needs someone to do everything short of wiping her ass and hold her
hair
back during her morning hangover purge. I thought you might like to
take
a look inside the daily routine that begins from the moment one opens
their
eyes and ends only when one falls into bed exhausted. These are just
the
general requirements of the day outside of the persons actual assigned
role.
In addition to all of this, the team must all sign releases with
production
that basically give away any rights one has as well as ownership of
anything
that the person might produce during the filming and some things are
literally
signed away in perpetuity, like confidentiality. That part really sucks
because
I would so love for people to write books about their experiences. The
tales
that could be told about the odd spending habits alone would be
fantastic.
Though I wouldn’t know anything about that. I do have sort of a day
in the life thing for you after the break. From refilling water bottles
with
tap water, to picking up dog poop, it certainly doesn’t seem like the
glamorous situation that applicants are expecting. And if you listen
very
closely, you can hear murmuring of the disgruntled team here and there
about
town.
Daily Morning Routine
Always text Lady of the Manor (LOTM) prior to entering her bedroom, or
knock.
Place an index card with the following day’s schedule copied from the
printed calendar each night.

of their own private investment fund. The fund’s main holdings
consisted
of buying up relatively large amounts of this metal over time. This
metal
would have been a good investment anyway, to be sure. The price would
have
risen steadily over the years, due to the industrial/technology demand
described
in Part 1. The limited industrial nature of this market made it ripe
for
a long-term, sizable squeeze. It isn’t like gold, silver, platinum –
which are pretty liquid. The group stealthily entered into many forward
purchase
contracts, which had the effect of taking a couple hundred million
dollars
of this metal off the market per year, spread out into the future. The
metal
is held in a few different storage facilities. This was just enough to
create
a real supply squeeze, causing the price to really skyrocket over a few
years.
The rise in the price of this metal causes the "target value" of this
impoverished and historically unstable country’s government to increase
as well. Notice the recent increase in rebel activity in this country.
At
present, the fighting is only in the early innings of the game, so to
speak.
In other words, the fighting has not yet meaningfully affected the
supply
of this metal. This country is the sole source for over half the
world's
supply of this metal. When the fighting reaches its apex, and much of
the
country is engulfed in revolution - this will temporarily cause the
price
of this metal to reach astronomical heights. That is when this group
will
dump their entire holdings of this metal to satisfy the world market,
at
record prices. The rebels get money to buy arms and finance their
operations
from outside industrial interests, who want to control supply of this
metal
more favorably, with a change in government. The really sick part? Our
billionaire’s investment group also holds interests in a very large
armaments manufacturer in the billionaire’s home country, which
supplies
these sorts of groups in third world countries, as well as some
governments.
So they make money on both sides of the trade, as it were.

famous London nightclub nights, but then we saw dozens of
photographers,
big Bentleys and stretch limos while we walked by, so we decided to see
what
was going on. The bouncer, who knew us, smiled at us and said ‘sorry
girls, not tonight, it’s a private party’, and turned to some insanely
dressed-up guests, checking his list. We weren’t going to let that stop
us so we walked to the corner to have a mini meeting, away from
watchful
eyes, and hatch a plan on how to crash this probably awesome party. We
knew
that famous London nightclub was connected through an underground
corridor
to the tacky tourist bar on the corner, the corridor led people
outside,
in case of a fire or other emergencies. The door that connected the
corridor
to the famous London nightclub, opened straight into the VIP section
(because
VIPs shouldn’t burn to death, like the non VIPs) but usually that door
was guarded by a bouncer. We decided we’d try anyway, walked into the
tacky bar, straight through a door that said ‘no entry, staff only’,
down the stairs, running along the corridor, and there was the door. No
bouncer.
We opened the door and quickly fanned out, like planned, into 3
different
directions. We could have not bothered since there was no bouncer on
the
inside either. After a few minutes, adrenaline pumping, we found each
other
again, delirious and excited. It was (permanent A+ list singer’s)
party!
She was sitting at the most centrally located, most visible table in
the
club, wearing a black tank top, showing off her muscular arms, and was
the
only woman at her table. Everyone else were older men in suits. They
did
not look very ‘clubby’. We also saw why we lucked out with the
no-bouncer situation: Neatly arranged like toy soldiers, standing
around
her table, were 5 or 6 bouncers, wearing sunglasses and earpieces and
looking
like Men in Black. Ok. We needed some drinks in us stat, so headed to
the
bar, where (foreign born A/A- list mostly movie actor) was buying. He
saw
us trying pathetically to get the attention of the barman, gave us one
of
his movie star smiles and screamed ‘you girls like absinthe?’ So
we all had 2 shots of absinthe each with him and a horde of other
moochers,
then continued our squeeze through the packed club. When we got to the
Moroccan
room - where you lounged on giant pillows, while listening to loud
middle
eastern beats - we saw (permanent A list mostly movie actress who is an
Academy
Award winner/nominee but doesn't act much any longer) holding court on
several
piled-up pillows, surrounded by minions who were laughing and clapping
like
trained seals. That room is kinda small and stuffy, but she made damn
sure
she stood out: arms flailing, hair flying, everybody had to look at
her.
We decided to head back to the VIP, but on the way we stopped at the
ladies’ room, where (foreign born permanent A list model), was chain
smoking in a corner with (an ex of the actor mentioned above). There
was
a long queue and 3 of us, so it took us a good 15-20 minutes to do our
business,
and I think the model did not stop smoking that entire time. Back in
the
VIP, we decided we had had enough excitement, so we entered one of the
VIP
‘cabins’. The VIP had a section of 2 circular cabin-like structures,
where you lounged on large comfortable round benches and a door that
you
could close for privacy. The walls of these cabins where made of carved
wooden
panels, with mosaic holes, so you could still get all the atmosphere
from
the club. We timidly opened one door, peaked inside and asked whether
there
was room, and (foreign born one named singer who is basically living
off
one monster album) yelled ‘come in girls, there’s always room’.
He offered us coke which we politely declined, and drinks which we
gratefully
accepted. Sensing that we weren’t some desperate coke whores, he left
after 3 minutes, but not before proudly declaring that we were free to
finish
his champagne. So there we were, just the 3 of us. Just when we decided
that
we could not sit in there any longer, like 3 losers, no matter how much
damage
the absinthe had done to our cognitive skills, the door opened and in
fall

all of you know) with 2 other people. They graciously introduced
themselves,
and small talked with us for a while while the former singer and one of

friends skillfully rolled some joints. Then we all smoked and laughed

made
it out and we did not see her again. Nobody seemed to care, or maybe
they
were just too stoned. I went back to the bathroom by myself and stood
in
line behind (former A list singer/possible murder suspect) - no pun
intended.

speaking
in front of people and churches again. He knows there is a movement

is though, he often was the one doing the abusing. Hundreds and

"expert"
would then have several followup sessions with the victims where he

abuse them again before moving on to the next town. Even more crazy is
that
he was usually paid for these interviews where he was abusing children.
His
feeling now is that with all of the abuse scandals going on that he can
get
back to what he was doing before at the height of abuse scandals. There
is
no way I will ever let him near another child again.

Kathy was 17 when she met a famous actor in a department store, she
says.
What followed is a tale of power, celebrity, abuse and the destruction
of
a mother-daughter relationship — and, for one writer, a window into
the ethical dilemmas for journalists amid the anti-harassment movement.
I
first heard about Kathy Taylor when I got a call in February from her
older
sister, Kristen Hiatt. Hiatt's question: Would I be interested in
hearing
about Kathy's experience decades earlier with a famous actor? Of course
I
said yes. Kathy soon called and started to tell me about a time in 1979
when
she, then 17 and working in the teen fashion department of a Denver
store,
spotted the actor, a household name, then in his late 30s. She had a
bit
of a crush on him, so she asked for his autograph. And she told him she
thought
he was cute. What she thought would be the briefest of encounters took
a
turn when he said, "You're not bad yourself," and asked her when she
got
off work. He invited her to his hotel that night. She called her mother
and
asked if she could go. It's obvious already that things are going to
take
a bad turn in this story. But in that first call, Kathy revealed what
happened
only up to a point. She wanted to know before she went on if THR would
pursue
the story. She already had approached a couple of newspapers, only to
be
turned away. And I can understand why. Based even on the limited
account,
it was clear this story would be hard to corroborate. Yes, Kathy was
willing
to go on the record, and she had family and some friends who would
confirm
that they had heard at least part of her story years earlier. But was
that
enough to publish a story that could devastate an actor who's now over
70?
There is no easy answer. Legitimate news outlets have a high bar for
publishing
stories alleging misconduct. Kathy had no photos of herself with this
actor,
nothing to document her claims. But having heard just part of her
story,
my instinct was that it wasn't fabricated. When accusers approach, you
try
to get a sense of whether their account is clear and consistent.
Kathy's
seemed to be both. I also leaned toward believing her in part because I
could
sense the toll it was taking on her to tell it — and the urgency of
her need to share it. By this time, I had spent months talking to
victims
of alleged improper conduct. (THR has published my reporting on former
Amazon
Studios chief Roy Price, Disney/Pixar animation chief John Lasseter and
film
financier Andrew Duncan.) People who had come forward were not doing it
with
relish and glee; generally, they were upset and deeply anxious. Often,
they
needed to talk at length. Even for battle-hardened reporters, it is not
always
easy to hear these accounts — and repeatedly, as often there are
multiple
accusers and every detail has to be checked. But when there are
credible
claims, it is not only our job to cover them but a privilege to be
entrusted
with the task. What we usually do when one accuser comes forward is to
look
for additional credible victims. If Kathy's story was true, it seemed
unlikely
that she would have been the only person to have had this type of
interaction
with the actor. But it also seemed likely that this actor would have
operated
with some stealth. He wasn't walking into the teen department of
Bullock's
on Wilshire. He was in Denver, for whatever reason, and he didn't
appear
to be on location or with companions. Without wanting to tar the actor
unfairly,
I called two people who had worked closely with him decades earlier to
ask
discreetly whether they had ever seen anything that made them
uncomfortable.
Neither said they had, and it quickly seemed that if he had a pattern
of
misconduct, he had kept it off the radar. We were stuck. But I wasn't
at
ease telling Kathy that we had tried and failed. If her story was true,
then
it should be told. I racked my brain. Then, weeks after her first call,
an
idea came to me: What if we named the accuser but not the alleged
perpetrator?
What if we gave Kathy a chance to tell her story while using this
example
to give readers a window into the decisions we grapple with in
journalism?
The downside was that people naturally would try to guess who the actor
was.
All I can say is, don't. You'll guess wrong. I explained the idea to
Kathy,
who embraced it. We agreed to meet at a restaurant, where she told me
that
revelations about other predators have made her want to come forward.
That
need crystallized with allegations about Matt Lauer. Sure, she'd heard
about
Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey, but Lauer had seemed so likable.
Like
the actor. We'll pick up Kathy's story as she, at 17, arrived at the
actor's
hotel in Denver that first night. (Note again that the events described
here
are her allegations.) "Right when I walked into the room, I started
feeling,
'Oh, what have I done?'" she says. "But I had this 'I've been chosen'
feeling.
I think that euphoric, larger-than-life feeling clouded any
17-year-old's
judgment I might have had." The actor was playing the guitar and she
sat
on a sofa beside him awkwardly. She was struck with the realization
that
this was a man much older than the couple of teenage boyfriends she'd
had.
(He was married but apparently separated.) That night, nothing dramatic
happened.
After an hour or so, he sent her home in a taxi. He asked if she wanted
to
hang out the next day and she said yes. The following morning, his
black
limo arrived at the small, ranch-style house where she lived with her
mother,
who was a schoolteacher. Once the car pulled up, Kathy says some
neighbors
emerged and asked, "Did your grandma die?" And she got to answer, "No,
this
is my friend." It was fun, and she told herself that the actor must
really
like her because he was taking her out. "How did you know that I like
it
when girls wear jeans?" he asked once she was in the car. They went to
the
Denver Botanic Gardens, where a couple recognized him and asked her if
she
was an actress. She felt confused but excited. After a fairly short
time,
he suggested going back to his hotel. Kathy believes it was sometime
during
this encounter when he asked her age. When they returned to his room,
he
ordered an elaborate lunch. He asked if she'd ever had caviar. He
offered
her pot, and they smoked it together. Then he said, "Let's lie down on
the
bed." At that point, Kathy says, she told him she "didn't want to do
anything."
He answered that nothing would happen, but very quickly, he was lying
on
top of her, aggressively trying to kiss her. She remembers thinking,
"This
is a stranger." She fended him off, but he convinced her to undress and
take
a shower with him. When Kathy was 10, she lost her father to a heart
attack
at 48. Her sister Kristen says their mother taught them to "avoid
conflict
at any cost, even if it was a detriment to yourself." So Kathy took a
shower
with the actor and he didn't push her for more. He gave her a couple of
T-shirts
from his latest movie and called her a cab. Once home, she told herself
nothing
really bad had happened. They hadn't had sex. She had his phone number,
which
felt magic, though she didn’t intend to dial it. It was "a souvenir
more than a connection." And that was that, until about a month later.
"Guess
who called?" her mother said. The actor wanted her to come to
California
for the weekend and would send her an airline ticket. Once again, Kathy
asked,
"Can I go?" Her mother asked to speak to the actor. Now 92, Margaret
Crowder
acknowledges that all she asked him was whether he would pick her
daughter
up at the airport himself and "take care of her." For Kathy, the fact
that
her mother did not stop her at that point — and for years would not
acknowledge the error — would later lead to lasting bitterness. Their
relationship has recovered somewhat, but it's still shaky. "I got
caught
up in the fantasy, too," Margaret says. Somehow she didn't focus on the
actor's
intentions toward her daughter. "I carry guilt about it," she says. "I
don't
know if I'll ever get over it." The actor did, in fact, pick Kathy up
at
the airport. He drove her to a small apartment in Malibu, made dinner,
gave
her some pot and some wine. Then they had sex. Kathy told herself that
because
she had made the trip, she had obligated herself to comply. "It was
emotionally
cold," she says. " 'Cause as soon as he was done, he's done. He gets
up,
walks away and I'm just left." Given that the age of consent in
California
was 18, the actor — if the allegations are true — had not only
committed statutory rape but had also transported a minor across state
lines
for illegal sexual purposes. The penalties in place at the time for
that
offense included up to 10 years in prison. They had sex again in the
morning.
In the daylight, he looked to her like "a hairy old man." She asked the
actor
to take her to Hollywood but he said no, it wasn't much fun there.
Later
that day, he put her on a plane back to Denver. After that, he called a
couple
of times, once from France, and she saw him — and slept with him —
again, during a layover on a trip to Hawaii. She had just turned 18. "I
still
liked any attention I could get from him," she says. "Especially not
having
a father, the male attention was part of what I was lacking in my
life."
That fall, she started at Arizona State University in Tempe. In
December,
he called and said he would be coming to Arizona. Though it was the
holiday
break, she flew back to school early to meet him. It felt good that he
wanted
to see her again, but it did not feel good when he called her well past
midnight.
By the time he picked her up, she says, she had started to feel awful.
It
only got worse when he took her to a hotel in Scottsdale and said,
"This
is an adjoining room and my kids are next door." After some quick sex,
he
said he had to drive her back to Tempe before his children woke up. The
whole
thing felt tawdry and humiliating. She never heard from him again. For
a
while, she told friends she had dated a movie star. When she married at
23,
she told her husband what had happened, though she didn't present it as
a
trauma. She had kids. But by the time she was in her 30s, problems
began:
panic attacks, an eating disorder, depression. She started seeing a
therapist.
And when she recounted the story, the therapist said, "Kathy, you know
that
was abuse." As details emerged, the therapist went further: "I think
you
were raped." With that, Kathy started to sob. Still, it took her some
time
to accept it because there had been no coercion. At her therapist's
urging,
she wrote the actor a letter telling him that what he had done was
wrong.
Her sister hunted down an address — probably his agent's — and
they sent it by certified mail. There was no answer. The lingering
issue
for Kathy, who is a therapist herself now, has been her mother's
failure
to intercede. "Something primitive gets broken when a mother does not
protect
her child," she says. Kristen hopes her mother's willingness to talk to
me
will help Kathy: "It's a really huge thing for Mom to be able to go on
the
record and say, 'I didn't do anything then but I can do something
now.'"
Kathy finishes telling me her story in the restaurant. She and her
friend
Sue, who came along for support, have shed some tears. Before we part,
Kathy
wants to read me an excerpt from her diary. "Kim will do something,"
she
wrote. "She already has — she believed me. … She thought of a way
to tell my story, even though she could not use his name in it. She is
doing
something and so am I. Time's up." Now you, the reader, can put

in the reporter's shoes. A woman brings you a story about a secret that
was

day because it meant skipping school, or at least part of it. It also

convincing the parents that the concert was important enough to not

camp out in a parking lot, but also miss some school. One of the more
tricky
aspects of skipping school WITH the parents permission is that I had to
write
and sign the excuse note. Oh sure, my parents would write one, but I
would
then take their note and tear it up and write my own. I learned during
my
Sophomore year of high school that the school office looked at the
signature
on the enrollment form to see if your excuse note was a forgery. So,
beginning
my Junior year, I signed the enrollment form in the way I would sign my
parents'
names. Worked like a charm. Except for when they gave me permission to
skip.
Anyway, the people I usually camped out with for tickets all had an
exam
that day. I had a different teacher and no exam. None of them wanted to
camp
out either because they knew it would involve drinking and a high
probability
of missing the first period exam. One of the calls I made was to
someone
I sometimes hung out with. She lived nearby but went to a private
school
and had a different group of friends. We had known each other forever
and
knew she was always down for a good camping out for tickets kind of
night.
She said sure and was going to bring TB. I have given her other
initials
in the past, but I am too lazy to look it up right now. One of my
friends
had dated TB which is how I spent most of my time with her. At that
point
in time, I don't think they were still dating, but I can't be sure. The
night
came and we trekked it down to a grimy parking lot that had our ticket
wonderland
on one side and a liquor store on the other. A liquor store that was
perfectly
willing to sell to hundreds of minors who were waiting in line. I don't
ever
remember the police doing much caring about it either. I also don't
ever
remember there being a fight. I think we all kind of knew that we had a
good
thing going with the liquor store and a bunch of people getting in a
drunken
fight would jeopardize that. Usually when I write about TB, it
generally
involves her doing me a favor or something. In this case though, she
was
there, but not really a part of the story. Yes, she is famous, but this
incident
is about another person who is famous and was there that night. At one
point
he was A+ list. An obnoxious A+ list, but he was. The flashiest of
flash
in the pans. A one year wonder, but, he has made a lifetime living off
that
one year of fame. He was there that night and several years from any
kind
of level of fame, but he acted as if he was already A list. He hit on
every
female in that parking lot and he used every line from every movie that
you
could think of. People were crying from laughing so hard but he was
deadly
serious. He thought his lines were working. Honestly. It got to the
point
where TB and my friend and others would engage with him just so they
could
hear more of his lines. After that night, I didn't see him again until
many
years later at the peak of his fame. TB says she ran into him a couple
of
times, but never brought up the night to him. She did say he would
always
look at her with a strange expression because she would think back to
that
night and break out laughing all over again. As for tickets? 10th row
for
that concert. I don't ever remember getting closer than that by
purchasing
them.

murder that took place after each had been raped by a man who then

himself after. Of course, kids being kids, most of them went past the

into a dumpster fire and he went from A to not working really quickly.

star of the show, went from having unlimited career possibilities to

is no one from that show that went in that room that didn't have their

just wither on the vine and die. Or just die in real life like this

a martyr's death, like his screen counterpart.

never reported. In the 90s I worked in a restaurant that was located on
the
15th floor of building off Oxford Street in London. It had great views
of
the city with wall to wall windows. Half the building was a hotel and

other floors were occupied by the BBC. Due to the location of these
offices
we often served big and minor celebs in the restaurant. I once made
John
Cleese and Michael Palin laugh (it doesn’t get much better than that).
I also once snapped at ‘Chelle and Sharon from Eastenders because they

attack. I shared a lift with Ewan McGregor (unfortunately he didn’t

end of year celebration. There were about 15 of them and of course
about
90% men. I’m Australian and one of them asked me in a deliberately
condescending tone, "So, which part of the antipodes are you from?".

they were those kind of fellows. As lunch was served and wine topped
up,
the conversation turned to deciding what was the biggest story that
they
had never reported. As the conversation continued, I made sure to stay
close
to the table and eavesdrop. Wouldn’t you? They tossed around a few
ideas
and then they all decided on one story that they all knew about, but
never
reported or even whispered in the press. According to the journos and
editors
one of the most famous marriages in history ended because the fiery
wife
actually walked in on her A list husband in bed with one of his male
friends.
So why was this never reported? They all really liked the A list man
who
was sprung playing sword fights with his able seaman. (they were quite
indifferent about the wife, who has never really been accepted in the
upper
echelons of British society). They respected him too much personally to

who does these days - but it came as a special surprise when in recent
months
I received a large padded envelope, return address a PO box in
Hollywood.
It was stuffed with letters, all of them from the 80s, and each stamped
with
an apparent rating: G, PG, PG-13, R, and finally X (which for those of
you
too young to remember = NC-17 today). They had been opened and read, I
could
tell, then returned to their envelopes. I immediately knew what they
were:
fan letters. During my brief encounter with fame, these parcels came
twice-monthly. Initially, they were unmediated - sent directly from my
agent's
office to my home address. Most were from tween girls, regular readers
of
teen magazines, and members of various fan clubs. I was advised to
write
back only rarely, when it was a child with cancer, or whose parents had
just
divorced, or something - you weren't supposed to be too accessible. All
the
others would get a canned reply, and head shot, if requested. I
promptly
ignored this advice, writing back to as many of them as I could find
the
time. Almost always, they wanted to know: did I have a girlfriend? My
agent
told me to always say yes, whether or not it was true, because boys
were
supposed to have girlfriends. Umm, where's yours, I thought. He had
only
a "personal assistant" (the first time I had heard the term), this
eighteen
year old boy who he claimed to have rescued from a troubled home
several
years earlier. The first time I met him I thought he was my age, or no
more
than a year or two older. I thought it was his son. Nope, more like his
"son."
(Funnily: my on-again, off-again beard since grade school - the first
girl
I had ever kissed - had with her twin sister been "discovered" by an
associate
of my agent, shortly before it happened to me. They had a small role at
the
opening of a lodging-themed cult horror flick, running and screaming,
and
were offered others afterward. But their mother, who became fast aware
of
how the business worked at the turn of the decade, pulled the plug on
it
all.) My own experience with fandom soon took a dark turn too. One of
my
correspondents was a boy my age in Nebraska - just about the only boy
who
wrote to me. He seemed nice enough, and (since I had a small/secret
crush
on him) it didn't even matter that our shared interests were mostly the
fabrications of a bitter Hollywood screenwriter turned copywriter for
the
agency. (It was all, you understand, designed to appeal to tween girls,
without
ever being overtly gay - certain things were in, and others out. Unless
you
were being groomed for "bad boy" parts, for instance, a taste for heavy
metal
was verboten, as was an interest in horror movies. According to the
press
releases, my favorite band was "Wham!," and my favorite movie was "the
Goonies"
[which, at least, I actually did like]. I preferred Benihana [this was
the
80s remember, when Japan was the future] to Mexican, but I'd never try
sushi.
The scar above my right eye was caused by a dog attack [a standard
period
sit com trope - I had actually collided with my teammate's front teeth
playing
soccer]. I liked the beach, playing cards, light blue...) A month or
two
into our correspondence, I got a letter which I knew to have a picture
inside.
I hurriedly tore open the envelope, only to find the nude photo of a
middle
aged man lying naked on a lakeside beach. The accompanying letter,
which
described "traditional coming of age rites," from Sparta to New Guinea,
laid
bare (you'll forgive the pun) his interest in me. He would kidnap me,
he
said - like Zeus did Ganymede - and "show me the path to manhood so
lacking
in the modern world." You may not remember a single line from
Shakespeare,
but somehow the words of creeps stick with you for decades. I left it
on
the counter for my parents to find, and that was the end of that. One
of
the office ladies - a nice woman who called me Bunny for some reason (I
think
I had shown up there in a Peter Rabbit costume once) - was assigned the
task
of screening my mail, and giving each letter a rating. In those months,
I
managed to leverage my fleeting celebrity for one thing: a real pen
pal.
Maybe I was just mad at having been burned (as in deceived and taken
advantage
of) by Middle Aged Man, or maybe it was that I wanted to connect with
someone
who got what I was going through. (For all but the most well-adjusted -
which
I was most certainly not - a certain amount of withdrawal is common.
People
you've known think you're being aloof, but it isn't that at all. Prior
to
this moment, you've only ever had a private life, with all its
expectations,
and deficits - the stuff of normal life. Now you have a public self,
which
has taken over your body, and image, and increasingly your life.
Strangers,
and even some friends, begin to see you as that. As a kid, and even as
an
adult, a part of you just wants to hide. As a counterpoint example, one
of
my friends in high school was this actress who played opposite probably
the
biggest kid star of the decade [all because of this one movie] in the
flick
that followed. I didn't understand it to be film noir, or kid noir -
these
were terms I wouldn't hear until college - but it was one of my
favorite
movies back then. It was also a big inspiration for this feature I'm
writing,
"the Little Drummer Boy." If kindness were a child actor, she was it:
despite
a regular tv gig she got straight As in AP classes, was always generous
with
her time, and did charity work not because she had to, but because she
wanted
to. I'd been hoping she might come out of actor retirement for the role
of
the dancing boy's mother, and I'm pleased to find she's willing to act
again.
In fact, I'm hoping her former screen mate might consider playing the
dad.
But I digress...) My pen pal and I had met at this charity dinner,
which
fittingly enough for the movie he was about to appear in, was devoted
to
funding Russian exchange students, and promoting "peace through
friendship."
(I don't know why I was there. It had been decided that my Special
Interest
would be world peace - which annoyed me because it sounded like a
beauty
pageant contestant - so I guess it had something to do with that. The
Soviet-era
swag on display though was pretty cool: old spy cameras [one a wrist
watch,
another a pen], folk art by Cossacks, an Afghanistan invasion force
play
set. My favorite was the spy stuff. It was like that game "Top Secret,"
but
for real.) You could tell even then that he was already over it, just
wanted
to get back to his friends, and baseball (which was his original
talent,
and part of the reason he got the role in the first place). I figured
it
was why I stopped hearing from him after a few months, and why he never
worked
again. What I only realized, after getting this parcel, was that there
might
be more to the story. Astonishingly, there was one final letter from
him
- which began with his usual good will, and goings on (he'd mark each
day
he had left in Hollywood, as if it was jail), but ended with a warning.
The
week prior, he'd been invited to a certain private club well known to
CDAN
readers. He was only there a short time before things got palpably
strange,
and uncomfortable, with one of the adults present. After demanding use
of
a phone for close to ten minutes, he was finally able to call his
father
in the midwest, who in turned called him a cab back to his hotel. (He
was
in town to do publicity.) The letter was marked with an X, presumably
by
my agent, to indicate it was not for my eyes: people protecting their
kind,
and all. So, why did I get it now, after all these years? I'm thinking
it's
because of what's happened, beginning last October. You wonder who else
is
getting what. You wonder what they're turning over to the appropriate
authorities. (As in: the letter is no longer in my possession.) There
was
this other letter too, the envelope marked conspicuously with the stuff
of
80s fan girls: hearts, clouds, rainbows, unicorns. That was all tongue
in
cheek, or at least meant in the best possible way. As it turns out, I
knew,
or at least had met my correspondent. "Dear *****," it read. "Not sure
if
you remember me, but I was that studio intern who made sure you didn't
end
up on a milk carton. I just wanted to write and maybe cheer you up. I
know
you didn't get the part, but I thought you did good. And for what it's
worth
the production is a mess." Oddly enough, even after all this time, this
did
make me feel better. In this business it isn't even always success that
matters,
but the perception of it. As I had said, more or less, I was or would
start
to become famous for something that didn't yet exist. I'm thinking that
this
is the proverbial way the world works. The only difference between a
con
and a hustle is that with the latter, you have the goods. You either
break
through the noise, or you don't. Almost never does anyone get an "e"
for
effort. ut I was just happy to hear from her too, however belatedly.
She
was that rare flower of kindness in the asphalt of Hollywood. And these
being
internet times, she wasn't hard to find. She's married now, with two
nice
and nearly grown kids. Stay tuned for Part 2!

who
would pass near his trailer would be able to hear and it shook people
to
their core. One actor on the set had enough and calling on his heritage
spent
three days calling on his Gods to do something to the horror that had
invaded
the set. Within a month, the child molesting actor was dead. There are
some
who say he came back from the grave to exact his revenge because within
a
year, the spell making actor was also dead.

Queen Of The Night: All of you know this actress. She used to be A
list.
In fact, she was A list on television multiple times. She is writing a
book
but told me some of the stories that she wants to put in the book but
editors
are squeamish to see in print. Good thing I know none of you get
squeamish.
Our actress says that for almost a decade she had to sleep with this
producer
almost every single day to keep her job. He is a permanent A list
producer
and when she got married he threatened to fire her. He didn't, but he
wasn't
willing to hire her again for any other project until she divorced. The
month
of her divorce, he gave her a job and she started having sex with him
again.
Those were her two biggest hits. In between those hits was a big miss,
but
again, she said she was expected to have sex with the producers, yes
plural
and was threatened every day with being fired if she didn't. She needed
the
work so she agreed. She also said it was during this time period that
has
led to her long time addiction problems. She was going through a lot
personally
and then what was going on at work so she started taking drugs to just
numb
everything. She says that while she was shooting her biggest hit, that
even
though she was married for most of the time on the show, that the
producer
who had always been jealous in the past was less jealous this time
around
because he was sleeping with an actress from a different show and
wanted
to spend as much time with her as possible. When our actress went to
another
hit after this hit, she thought for once she wouldn't have to sleep
with
someone on set. She was wrong. The lead actor made it clear he would
fire
her unless she hooked up with him. This led to a situation I have
written
about before but she refused to comment about.
