One of the more famous Hollywood killings didn’t actually happen in Hollywood. It happened in NYC. Over the past few weeks, there has been some new information about the case which has always been whispered about, but never really explored. It involves the sibling of a former B+ list mostly television actress who hit it big on two television shows and kind of big on another three or four. The sibling traveled the country interviewing celebrities. She often traveled first class and also often accompanied some of the celebrities when she was tagging along doing a day in the life kind of story. Because of who she knew, and the amount of traveling she did, she was asked to smuggle drugs on nearly every trip. Most of the time she was acting on the behalf of record companies who wanted her to bring it from one coast to another. All of the courier work paid five or six times what she earned in her regular job. She made her money by doing high volumes of trips because there was not really that big of a risk at the time for her. She wanted a big score though. This is where some of the new information comes in. Apparently there was a religious organization that at the time made most of its money smuggling drugs. Vast quantities of it. The religious organization was a US offshoot of a global religion. They used the money for new construction and to line the wallets of the leaders of the organization. The sibling got involved and was supposed to be the person who handled payoffs and logistics for a very important shipment of drugs. Well, one of the people also involved got busted by the cops for something and ended up talking a lot. The police released him to try and turn his bosses. The bosses caught on to him and tortured him. To try and save his own life he said the sibling was working with the police which is why he had been caught. It wasn’t true, but the bosses didn’t want to take a chance so they called her into town and killed her and left her to be found in a very public place.

This blind is a little different from most. I just wanted to give you some insight into what some performers go through when they make it big. I first met this foreign born former A list singer a few days before the Grammy Awards the year Rihanna got beat by Chris Brown. It was a strange night. I remember it well considering how much I had to drink. A shocking amount even for me. The kind of night where you are so drunk you call a locksmith to help you get in the house even though your parents are asleep in the house and you could presumably knock. Still don’t know what happened to the keys. It was a night where I got kissed on the cheek by Rihanna as I held a door open for her. I know Chris Brown was there but I don’t remember seeing him. I do remember going to the bar at this still way overpriced club and asking for a drink. No drinks there under $15. F**kers. I think I might have whispered f**kers when the bartender brought my drink and the tab. She said she liked the way I said f**kers. With her accent, I told her I liked the way she said it while trying to sound American. We drank. A lot. Each time the bartender brought us a drink we said f**kers. It was funny at the time. I found out later that she actually paid for all the drinks that night. At some point she told the bartender to put everything on her tab. It is hard to say anything bad about someone who bought you drinks all night. Or the next night. I think the following night after that was the Grammy Awards. I didn’t see her for a few days after that but then we hung out a couple of more times right after. At the time I met her, she seemed great. She was drinking as much as me, if not more. People would stop her and she would freak out a little bit. This fame thing had come out of nowhere. By this time she had been dealing with it for about a year and she didn’t seem to be dealing with it very well. She was fine going up to someone, but hated being stopped just randomly because she didn’t know what to say or how to react. She just wanted to sing and perform and had no idea what to do. A short time after we met she went on to finish her tour and we would text from time to time but she was in Asia and working and the time thing never seemed to really get sorted out. She came back to the US and we hung out a bit and I saw her last show of the tour. Turns out it was the last show she ever played. Kind of. There have been a couple of one off things, but not much else. Her label wanted another record but she said she just wasn’t into it. She had no heart to put out something that would make her have to go out there and face people again. Plus, there was part of her I think that was afraid to fail. That her next record would bomb so why even put something out. It did pretty much bomb. I think she was relieved. Dropped by her label and free to do what she wanted. She became a recluse. She dated from time to time but guys wanted to go out and she wanted to stay home. Away from everyone. She told me she basically tried to stay inside for four years. At that point she figured most people wouldn’t recognize her any longer. She is at a stage in her life where she doesn’t know what to do. She loves singing, but doesn’t want to tour. She is literally scared of any kind of success that would make her feel fame again. She does some acting, but only wants minor roles. She is willing to write and sing, but only for projects and not for herself. So often we talk about people wanting to be famous or if you signed up for acting you signed up to be famous. Sometimes though someone has no idea what fame really is until they are living it and it turns out they want no part of it and basically give up everything they thought they wanted to do because they dislike fame so much. One thing that hasn’t changed is when we go out we still say f**kers every time someone brings us a drink.

Our A+ lister recently decided to invest in a company. She made a big deal about it. The problem for her is that it required an actual cash outlay and was not something that could be charged. She had the money, but it was a close call. How did it get like this? Back in the day when she was first hitting it big, she had good management. They kept her expenses low and the income high. Times were really good. Then, her management changed. What was just her money now became the money of her and her manager for all of his ideas to rule the world. The problem is most of his ideas have not turned out so great. It probably wouldn’t be that big of a deal if he had not put their money into the deals and used more money from outside investors. High risk and high reward. He didn’t want to share. Meanwhile, our A+ lister started stepping up her spending game at the same time her record and tour sales started declining. What to do? Basically the couple run a tab and charge everything to the record company. They have sold off a lot of their future royalties because they didn’t have enough cash to cover the bill when the record company comes calling. They also have sold off the future royalties of some of the artists they control. They had to sell property to pay off some investors and to keep his latest business afloat. They went from owning a really expensive property to leasing something not all that great compared to it. They made a bs offer on a house to make it look like they were moving up, but they could never provide proof of funds which is why they lost out. They didn’t have enough money. Over the past six months, the monthly allowance our A+ lister has been forced to live on has been reduced. The clothes have been downgraded a couple of levels and the household expenses have been cut in half. The big investment he made he needs to get out of but can’t because the entire house of cards would come tumbling down and bankruptcy, both professionally and personally would have to occur. It would destroy their whole brand and image so they keep trying to make it work, but short of winning some type of lottery either of the real variety or some singer breaking out like Adele, it just isn’t going to happen.

This one really stood out because it was planned out in advance by the actor. Our actor is an Academy Award nominee. Didn’t win. Supporting actor. The nomination was way back in the day. If you saw this actor you would all know his face, but lots of you wouldn’t know his name. Character actor. He kind of has had a resurgence of fame since he was brought into the tent of the quirky director who always uses the same actors in his quirky movies. Good movies though. For this one we need to go back a few decades. Indie film set. An award winning indie film. Beat out one of the classic indie films of all time at a very famous festival. Our actor had a scene where he is getting a lap dance from an actress. Prior to filming the scene with the actress, our actor showed off his collection of audition tapes from the handful of actresses who wanted to play the role. In a couple of them he was really proud of the way he would reach behind the actress and lift them by sliding his finger inside of them. Fast forward to the filming of the scene. Our actor does the same move to the actress who got the part. She gets up and slaps the actor and told him that wasn’t ok. For 24 hours, the director and producers begged the actress not to file any charges or any grievances with the union. After an apology from the actor, she agreed to stay and work and as far as I know has never told anyone. It was her first movie. She only worked in the business for a few years. It looks like she actually had a recurring role for several years on that network crime show that begat so many. One thing that struck me as interesting is that the director was married at the time to someone (long time actress who was going to be a one movie wonder until a cable show came along) who would have made sure the actress would have reported it.

I do about ten panels a year. I give about 25 to 30 interviews. I can't think of one in recent memory that didn't include some version of THIS question: "What is your experience of sexism in television and film?" Depending on my mood, I'll say, "It is better than it used to be"; "Insidious and still prevalent"; "Hidden, subtle, but a part of almost every interaction I have." Or I'll say, "We are proud to have a show run by women and one deeply feminist man, and our work culture is different." But this morning I woke with a new answer to the question. And it sickens me to have it. Last night, after wrap on location, Lena and I and a few co-workers went into town to eat. We ran into a small portion of the crew of another TV show that shoots nearby and introduced ourselves. Within five minutes, a producer/director of that show had cornered Lena. Though the rest of us were are all in vaguely separate conversations, we were able to hear what was said. Or shown in this case: an iPhone photo of a mutual friend with a cock next to her face, ostensibly a still from his TV show but shown at a completely inappropriate time. It saddens me to say this isn't the part of the story that even upset me. This is fairly common behavior with strangers and Lena. In my most generous moments, I can see their nervousness, their familiarity with her frank sexual work, and their desire to make a connection. Our Girls writer Sarah Heyward said to the director, "Of course, that's the only kind of picture you can show Lena Dunham." From here things really started to devolve. The director asked Lena to have dinner alone the following night with an actress on the show he works on. Not because he thought they should meet, but because he wanted Lena to persuade the actress to "show her tits, or at least some vag" on TV. Surely Lena could make a compelling argument. After all, he continued, "You would show anything. Even your asshole." This is something a man felt compelled to say to a Golden Globe–winning actor, showrunner, and best-selling author who just happens to be female. So it's easy to speculate what might be said to women working with him, under him, dependent on his approval. Despite Lena's obvious discomfort, he then went on to critique and crudely evaluate the bodies of all the women on his show. Who knows, maybe this was an anomaly. But it happened. And it was witnessed. And even some of the most loving and sensitive men in our tribe who heard the whole thing suggested afterward that the director seemed very drunk. Oh, phew, that explains everything. When women get drunk, they are asking for it. When men get drunk, they don't mean it. Together with Lena and Judd we run one of the filthiest writers' rooms. You could argue we run one of the filthiest shows. Let me tell you why this is different. Why this isn't about taking a joke. The writers' room is a space where creative people need to feel safe taking chances. Even if they are offensive. Even if they are repulsive. This man approached a woman at a social gathering and asked her to help convince an actor to show her tits. It's another planet. I woke up this morning and I didn't want to wait for a panel to tell the story or a journalist to ask me the question. I was sick of protecting people from their own behavior, and I refuse to do it anymore. It's not enough to be mad. It's not enough to know it's wrong. When we share, we unlock other women's stories, and suddenly secrets don't seem so necessary. The only thing standing between men and outdated, hideous behavior is their ability to get away with it. Even as an adult mother of two, it took a shocking moment while I was just trying to get a lobster roll to call bullshit. Why don't we all say it? Fear is what keeps us bound to situations that scare and antagonize us. Our voices are our superpower. Jenni Konner never got that lobster roll.

Just before there was an internet, there was a female high school student who had a boyfriend and all was good with the world. They were taking things slow and even though they had been dating a little over a year, had never had sex. The pair lived in a small town in the south. They were both very popular in high school and involved in several different clubs and organizations and sports. One of the organizations she belonged to had the principal of the school as the factory adviser. In this small town, there was only one high school and the principal was treated really well. Apparently he had had been a high school football player at the school and went on to a big time SEC school on a scholarship and would have had a shot at the NFL but blew out his knee one too many times. Apparently it was his thing to find one or two female teens at the school each year to rape multiple times a week and scare them into silence. The time these events occur, one of those teens was the subject of this blind. Even though she never had sex with her anyone, she was forced to have sex with the principal once a week after her group’s meeting. She was scared to say anything to anyone and knew no one would believe her. Even if they did believe her, no one was going to allow her to get rid of the town’s local hero or damage his reputation. For several months she put up with the weekly rape. Then one day she discovered she was pregnant. She told the principal. He beat her and told her it was her fault and he wanted nothing to do with her and he couldn’t be the father and basically just shamed her. Not knowing what else to do, or where to turn, the teen told her boyfriend. He dumped her. He then started telling other people about the pregnancy. Even he knew though not to mention the principal. He just said she slept around and no one knew who the father was. The teen seriously considered killing herself. One day, a guy from school who heard the stories, offered to help. The two basically acted as if they were dating and a few weeks after they started dating, the woman told her parent she was pregnant. She told them her new boyfriend was the father. The parents wanted the couple to get married or have the teen go away until she had the baby and give the baby up for adoption. The teens decided to get married. They had a daughter. Fast forward a couple of decades and that daughter is a B+ list former Disney actress who still does the tweener thing sometimes despite being way over that age. When the actress started hitting it big, the principal showed up one day and said he wanted a piece of her earnings or would leak the story to the press. The family ended up paying him for a few years and then one day he was walking through town and got hit by a hit and run driver, killing the principal. No one was ever caught. Selena Gomez

She was at that line between illegal and barely legal. She is a foreign born B list singer who has probably risen as high as A-. Fame and success are fickle things though and right now she is in a valley. She has talent other than singing so she will be able to make a living in the music business. It remains to be seen if she will ever climb out of the valley as a performer. She has some issues. Probably for good reason. She is still young. What happened to her is still fresh in her mind. She does like her drugs and booze and parties. Back when she was just starting to get a whisper of fame in her own country, she had the opportunity to meet this former A+ list singer (in a group) who is probably permanently A list in his own country. She was star struck. He offered to work with her. Apparently she believed him. One thing led to another and the married former A+ lister got the much much younger singer pregnant. He tried to buy her off with $500 to get an abortion. He threatened her career if she ever said anything to anyone and especially his wife. Our young singer did tell people. Not so many who got her pregnant, but that she was. Her new record label was ticked off. They sent her away. They didn’t want anyone to know because they saw an image for her and pregnant teenager was not part of that image. So, she left. Alone. They sent her overseas and she went. Alone for almost a year in an apartment in a city where she had never been before. Her mom flew out right before the baby was born and given up for adoption. A week later they flew back home together and she started recording a new record.
