"You have to come see this. It is a s**t show." That was the message I got on my phone from this celebrity offspring of a permanent A lister. She was filming a reality show. Not her usual thing. Oh, once in awhile because of her last name she will be invited on a show as a guest, but this was a series and for that season one of the stars. When I called her back, she started to go into detail about what she meant, but at some point said this is something you have to see to believe because, "I understand no sane person would believe this without seeing it." It was the goings on from the biggest name on the show. On a show where even Dancing With The Stars wouldn’t cast their net, this actor was the biggest fish. Honestly, now that I think about it, DWTS might try and land him. Well, they would if they could get him away from his straight to On Demand career. Hey, at least he works. Back when all of this happened he was a decade removed from his biggest success, but he had that name, which on a show like this was all important. The show generally just filmed once or twice a week and the next week after her call I went down to the set with her to see what was going on. The first thing I saw when I got over by the trailers, was our actor with a cast iron skillet slamming it against the trailer. He was holding it with two hands while screaming, "Where the f**k is my breakfast. Someone better bring me my f**king breakfast." Over and over for ten minutes until some harried production assistant brought him a bag of McDonald’s. Yep. He opened it up and looked inside. Apparently it was to his satisfaction because he then screamed, "How f**king hard was that." He then tossed the skillet to the ground and walked inside his trailer. He was supposed to start shooting 30 minutes later. When a different production assistant went to the trailer to get him, our actor opened up the door fully naked and screamed, "Does it look like I’m f**king ready to shoot?" He then slammed the door. Two minutes later the door opened and his soon to be wife was kicked out the door and pushed down the stairs by the actor’s foot. He started screaming at her and calling her every possible name you could imagine. She looked rough and her clothes were torn and makeup smeared. Five minutes after that he emerged from his trailer fully clothed, totally calm and asked very politely where he needed to go. The civility lasted about an hour. He then started getting super antsy and was talking back to the director. He walked off the set and started smoking a cigarette. Then another. People kept trying to get him to come back. Oh, he went back alright. They were filming this competition scene and he took this weight lifting bar that holds weights on either end. It weighed about 45 pounds. He started swinging that thing around. He missed a couple of people by inches and broke chairs and lights and a couple of abandoned cameras. His eyes were insane. His hair was flying around and he kept circling like a samurai with the bar held up with two hands. Finally he walked back to his trailer taking swings at people or things in his way. He walked inside the trailer where you could hear the destruction. He walked out with a few of his things and walked to his car and drove off. No one ever saw him on the set again.

I was visiting a film set back in the day with a guy in a band who was singing the film’s big song. It was a do nothing kind of day. We were just goofing around and raiding craft service. The producers just wanted him to visit the set to get a feel for the movie and to get any ideas for a music video for that title song. The movie actually opened at number one and my friend got an award from ASCAP for the song. If you were a teen at the time the movie was released you probably saw it. Anyway, we were not doing much of anything when he got called away to go meet some people. That left me on my own. I decided to try and find another friend of mine who was doing props on the movie. I asked around and someone pointed in the general vicinity of some trailers. I remember very clearly knocking on the door to the trailer. No one answered, but I knew my friend wouldn’t mind if I went in and waited. One big problem. It wasn’t the trailer for my friend. Nope. It was the trailer of an actress in the movie. An Academy Award winning actress actually. I walked in on her with another woman. In bed. Naked. The other woman was an actress who was also in the movie but is known for more behind the scenes stuff than in front of the camera. I mumbled a sorry and got out as quickly as I could. I was sorry I had walked in on it, but it wasn’t a big deal to me and two trailers beyond was the prop trailer. I didn’t say anything to him about what I saw. It couldn’t have been more than ten minutes when our Academy Award winning actress poked her head inside, saw me and motioned me out of the trailer. I walked out and apologized to her for walking in. She immediately started talking. "Did you tell anyone what you saw? Please tell me you didn’t. Please don’t tell anyone." She was shaking. Crying. She told me that no one knew that she was bisexual and that if anyone found out she thought her career would end. She was at a crossroads in her career and had a huge franchise lined up which she thought would disappear. I told her I hadn’t told anyone and wasn’t planning on it and would make sure I never would. It was then she gave me the biggest hardest hug I have ever received. I guess she trusted me and she was right to. Fast forward a few years. She finished a huge movie and the first installment of that franchise. I ran into her while I was eating lunch with a couple of people. She was walking past with someone and did a double take when she saw me. She stopped in her tracks which caused the guy behind her to crash into her and almost knock her over. She bent down and whispered thank you in my ear before kissing my cheek and moving on. In the few times we saw each other after that, the meetings were just as brief but you could tell she cared less about what others thought and she finally was able to say publicly what she had feared someone would force her to do so many years earlier.

Back in the day, when I was young and exuberant for politics, I decided to find a campaign and help out in whatever way I could. The first campaign I looked into was the party I wanted to help, but the candidate was just not to my liking. I was actually kind of discouraged. That had been a US House race, so I decided to go a little lower down the food chain. I ended up finding a State Senate candidate I could get behind. She was in her late 30’s/early 40’s and this was her first big campaign. Her district was large, but her core base was at the opposite end of the district from me so she really didn’t have many volunteers in my area. I was involved in the final two months of the campaign. I never made any phone calls, but I did knock on several thousand doors. Repeatedly. If a person wasn’t home then you would go back and back and back until you spoke to the person. I spent hours and hours doing it. Most of the time I was alone. It was always easier if you were with someone, but there were not enough people helping to the point where they could afford to send us out in pairs. When I say, "they" it was the local party office rather than a campaign manager for the candidate. When you go door to door you really don’t know what the reaction will be. The thing that struck me the most was that there was very little name recognition. I don’t think her opponent had very much name recognition either. I remember this rally that several "big name" politicians were set to speak. They were from in and out of the state. All I remember from that day was that it rained nonstop; no one came out; and I ended up eating about 100 tamales and drinking beer that was supposed to be for the crowd that never showed. I remember that about once a week the candidate would show up and thank everyone for working. A genuine thank you. She would bring food. She would always invite us to her house and cook for us. I don’t remember hearing about any polls or anything like that. I doubt they even polled anyone. It was just knock and knock. Others called and called. The entire volunteer force was probably 10 and there were only 3 or 4 of us who were doing it almost full-time. I remember on election day we called people and called more people and kept calling them until they told us they went and voted. We went to polling places to try and get preliminary numbers. Our candidate couldn’t really afford any kind of election night party so we all went to a party being hosted by someone higher on the food chain. Our candidate didn’t come with us and no one really expected to hear the results of her race until late that night. Two days later they finished counting. She won by 39 votes. Whenever someone says their vote doesn’t matter, I tell my story. It is easy sometimes in California to be blase about some voting because many of the results are preordained. But in the down ballot races where the total votes and margins between candidates is so small, every vote does count. As for the candidate? All of these years later she is in the same job and has never really been challenged since. All it took was that first election. All those doors and all those calls. It was the only time I really ever felt like I made a tangible difference. I don’t know if would have felt that way if she won by thousands of votes. Because the margin was so narrow though, you go back and think about the people that you actually talked to or bugged enough until they went and voted. The tamales were really good too. Homemade. I think it was the first time I had eaten a tamale. Have never gone a week or two without eating them since. Oh, one other thing. The "big name" candidates brought in were basically a-holes. One of the people brought in ran for President a couple of times but was in Congress and never did really well running for President. Anyway, I specifically remember him coming in and asking who the candidate was and the name and then five minutes later giving a speech talking about how they had known her for years and blah blah. Then he finished and asked what city they were going to next and what the candidate’s name was. I’m just not sure it really does a whole lot of good. KINDNESS: Several years ago I was house sitting for a friend. Honestly, it was more of a please please can I stay in your guest house while you are out of town for a few months, and also by the way, could I do so rent free. Divorce is expensive. Don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise. It is the moving out from one place and finding another and getting stuff to fill the place. It is so much easier to just sort things out at a friend’s house while using their cable and internet and the occasional pay per view order you hope they don’t notice. It was a pretty down point in my life. Lucky for me, my friend said yes and for the next three months I experienced a life journey like no other. I was flipping through the channels one evening. It was summer and this must have been about 6 or 7pm. I had been sitting there a couple of hours and I was bored. I did something that night I don’t normally do. I went for a walk. Yes, the time honored tradition of taking a walk through the neighborhood. In this case, the neighborhood was filled with leafy trees and nice wide sidewalks and no one ever seemingly using them. Oh sure, there were a few people out, but not many. I started walking and about a half block from the house I saw a really tall guy walking who was wearing shorts and a t-shirt with a baseball cap. He was pretty thin but I remember so bronze. Like a spray tan every morning kind of bronze. He was walking in the opposite direction and we both said hi to each other as we passed. The kind of awkward hi when you know you are supposed to say something, but don’t really quite know what to say. A few days later, the same scenario played out with my boredom and who should I see again, but the same guy wearing the same clothes but a different hat. We said hi a little more pleasantly this time around and again continued on our merry ways. I started walking on a fairly regular basis but didn’t see him again for about a week. When I saw him again, he was in bad shape. I didn’t know it at the time. All I noticed from about a block away was him holding on to a tree to keep from falling. As I approached, he was even more thin and the bronze was not quite as bronze. I asked him if everything was ok and he said he was, but I was really doubtful. I asked him if he needed some help. He said he would be ok. He took off his hat to wipe the sweat beneath it and I got a good look at him for the first time. I asked him if we had met before because he looked really familiar. He said that he didn’t think so. After he had caught his breath, he seemed to get a second wind. It was then he told me he had been undergoing chemo and this last treatment had really taken a lot out of him. He said he would be ok and after a couple of assurances we both went our separate ways. A few days later we were going to pass each other, but he stopped and said thanks and that he apologized if he didn’t act appreciative over the offer of help. I didn’t think he had anything to apologize for but he wanted to make sure. We started talking and started walking. He told me he was a doctor. It was the truth, but not the whole truth, but I didn’t know that at that time. He started talking about his cancer and the treatment and explained how chemo worked and the side effects but did it in such a way that it was more like story telling than a doctor being all medical. Over the next month or two we would often run into each other and he would talk and I would listen. He railed against health insurance companies. Not for himself, but for others he saw in treatment. He knew people not covered at all because of pre-existing conditions or others that had reached their policy limits. He confided in me that he was currently bankrolling about ten such people. Ten doesn’t sound like a lot, but their bills were costing him about $200K a month. At some point that summer he told me he was not going to live, but was trying to drag things out as long as possible. It was close to Labor Day when he told me he was up to supporting 35 patients and was spending close to $1M a month. He had set up a foundation which he hoped would be able to support 100 or more patients at a time for the rest of time. He talked about everything and would give these 30 minute lectures about life and what people can do for each other and the miracles of science. He said he should have died months ago but because he had a purpose to help others that it had given him a lift. He talked about wondering if that lift was some type of chemical in the body and whether it could be found and produced. I last saw him about the middle of September. I was walking less. He was walking less. I was about to move out of the guest house. There was no goodbye. Just one day I was gone and I assumed he would be doing his walks. We never even exchanged names. The first week of November I was looking at Variety and there he was, just staring at me. He had died the previous day. It was quite the shock to the industry he had died. Apparently no one knew. I think it is fair to say he was a permanent A+ lister. Behind the scenes guy, but A+ list. You can’t look at that body of work and the things he did in life and the things he set up for after his passing and not make him A+ list. So, picture it: Baltimore, Maryland, 2001. I’m interviewing a legend in hip-hop. And I’m also interviewing his son, who is beginning what would be a brief career in hip-hop. They have a huge entourage including armed bodyguards. I’m in a group of about 15 people and I stay close. If I lose track, I won’t get my story. [Cue horror music.] And if I lose track, I won’t be able to get back to my hotel. [Cue horror music again.] After the young son finishes a performance, the entourage begins to gather their things and make their way to the tour bus. Suddenly! The crowd from the show breaks through the barrier and swarms of pre-teens start sprinting our way. If we didn’t get back to the tour bus, we would be mauled. The bodyguards grab the young son and begin running toward the bus. The whole entourage gets closer to the bus. So what do I do? I fell. Just like in the movies. I FELL! [Cue horror movie once again.] I scramble to get my notebooks and recorder and run as fast as I can towards the tour bus. As soon as I get to the door, one of the bodyguards stopped me from getting on the bus. I couldn't figure out why. What was on that bus? I was on there earlier and there was nothing weird. "Please," I said. "I need to get on this bus. I have no way of getting back." He said, "Sorry. Can’t help you. No reporters on the bus." I pleaded. I had been on the bus all day! He told me that when they came back to the bus they found someone hiding there. So for safety reasons they weren’t letting anyone but family and security on the bus. I kept asking — they knew they could trust me! He finally went on the bus and talked to someone. He let me get on. But he warned me that anything I saw on this bus wasn’t for my story. Finally, I saw what he didn’t want me to see: a shotgun practically as long as I was tall on the lap of the rapper. And every single person on the bus was holding a high caliber weapon — including the tween! My stomach dropped. I quickly turned away from the oversized sawed off shotguns and looked straight ahead. The bodyguard asked me, "Do you see anything on this bus you want to talk about?" "Nope," I said. "Not at all." Imagine driving on a bus with 12 people, including a tiny tween, holding on to powerful weaponry on a bumpy tour bus. The bus was completely silent for the entire ride back to the hotel. One of the things I have never grown to love or even like is sitting in a recording studio watching people make music. When you are producing or writing or recording it can be entertaining, but if you are there and simply watching it is one of the most boring things to do. So, it was with a very large sigh that I agreed to go meet a producer friend of mine who was in the studio and asked me to drop by the studio for a bit while he was working with a singer. I was in Miami and we were supposed to hang out, but the hanging out got delayed because of the recording. Did I tell you that recording sessions always run behind? Always. Have you ever sat waiting for a flight that is delayed for hours? If you want some practice dealing with that, schedule a meeting with someone who is coming to meet you after a recording session. There are a million things always going on at a recording session and in my experience, very few of those things are the process of actually recording. I remember back in the day I actually had to go to a session and for three days, despite, everyone involved being there the ENTIRE 72 hours, maybe two hours of recording was completed. It felt like 40 people were jammed into a tiny hotel room and the only ones able to escape were the food and drug delivery people. Everyone else was there, in that room. It was awful. Anyway, back to Miami. I arrived at the studio soaking wet. The 50 yard dash across the parking lot was through one of those Miami downpours that make you wonder how there could possibly be a drought anywhere on earth with the amount of water that I was just subjected to. Do you know that smell of cigarette smoke and wet clothes? That attraction smoke has to wet clothes? As soon as I walked into that studio it was like Dementor smoke knew there was someone new in the room and attacked. I burned the clothes. Normally I would donate any clothes I don’t want any longer, but that would have been unfair to the rest of the clothes donated by other people that came into contact with these. You know what makes me mad? I was wearing what was my favorite shirt at the time. I walked into the studio and saw my friend. I looked into the recording area and as I expected no one was in there. Who should have been in there was this A+ list singer in his corner of the singing world who all of you know. I asked where he was and apparently he was in another room paying off his dealer. Our singer went big. He bought almost a kilo. Yep. One skinny person and one big kilo of coke. When he came back in the room, he just set it on a coffee table in front of a sofa and helped himself. To be honest, he was more than willing to share, but that is just not me. It didn’t stop the guys that are with him all the time or the four women (none of whom was his wife) from helping themselves. The singer and his entourage spent the next hour just gorging. During that hour he made all the women get topless and made sure to do some lines off their breasts. When one tried to put her top back on, one of the guys with the singer started yelling at her and looked like he was going to hit her. She backed down and stayed topless. After the coke it was time to get some champagne delivered. Our singer used the time before its arrival to chain smoke right there in the room. He said it was good for his singing voice. One of the women said she was bored. Apparently, even though, I totally understand where she was coming from, this was not the proper thing to say. The guy who had been rough before yanked the woman up and ripped off her dress. He then dragged her out of the studio and told her to go be bored somewhere else. I never saw her again. Another guy in the group made a call and at the same time the champagne arrived, so did two more women, both dressed almost identically to the remaining other three women. With the arrival of the women and champagne, everyone celebrated by doing coke for another hour. Apparently things had progressed to the point where the women now had to do lines of coke off the men and remove coke from their genital area by using their mouths. This led to some sexual activity in the room right there in front of everyone although the singer took a woman he was interested in to a side room where he had previously paid his dealer. Thirty minutes later he came out and said he was ready to record. He went in the booth and sang for a good five minutes before he decided he didn’t like it and came back out. He needed to take a break he said so everyone did some more coke and smoked some more cigarettes and rotated the women. At this point, almost half that kilo was gone and there had been five minutes of recording. I couldn’t take any more and told my friend we could just catch up next time I was in town. A few hours later I got a text from him saying that the whole group of them had flown to Puerto Rico on a private jet because the singer felt like he would get more inspiration there. The next day my friend texted me and said maybe another 20 minutes of recording had been completed during the 24 hours but they ran out of coke so went back to Miami. Marc Anthony

An unnamed celebrity anonymously filed suit Tuesday against a woman who he claims is threatening to release a tape of them having sex unless he pays her $2.5 million. Identified only as Doe in the Los Angeles Superior Court complaint, the plaintiff wants an injunction preventing the defendant, her former attorney and a sex tape broker from allowing anyone to view the tape or duplicating it. He also wants the video and any copies lodged with the court pending the outcome of his lawsuit. The woman, identified in court papers as Elizabeth Ruiz, could not be immediately reached for comment. A celebrity website turned down her offer to sell them the tape, according to the suit, which says Doe "has worked hard his entire life to hone his skills and become one of the most talented people in the United States and the world." He also has received many honors and accolades and "is widely recognized as the world’s best at his job," according to his court papers, which state that his ability to benefit from his fame "depends on the appeal of his persona to many different people … including families and children." "He cannot count on this appeal if Ruiz exposes images of him in the most intimate of physical acts between a man and a woman, done in private and intended to remain private," his court papers say. Ruiz has stated that "she wants to be the next Kim Kardashian" and hopes to be catapulted to fame and fortune with the sex tape at Doe’s expense, the suit alleges. Kardashian herself was the subject of a sex tape with former boyfriend Ray J. Doe and Ruiz met in Cancun in June and she used her cell phone to record the two of them having sex, but "agreed that she would keep the recording private," the suit alleges. Ruiz responded "gotcha" when he reminded her after they returned to the U.S. that he wanted the tape destroyed, the suit alleges. But in September, a "noted" sex tape broker told Doe’s lawyer that Ruiz desired the broker’s assistance in selling the video, the suit alleges. Bob Ross He Ain’t: Whenever I would see this former celebrity on television acting holier than thou and quoting scripture, I would just shake my head and remember the two nights I witnessed his holiness firsthand at a con. Back then, they weren’t really called cons. We just called them conventions. What this one was basically a gathering of some people who were from different fields of entertainment and celebrity who gave talks. The subject of our blind was there as more of a crossover. He was a celebrity, but he was also there talking about being a success and even giving some demonstrations. I knew the name and even knew some of his work, but had never seen him or met him in person. At this convention there were a bunch of very attractive, college aged women who were getting paid as greeters and other gofer type things. I remember he had just given a talk about going to church and his beliefs and love of marriage. He walked off the stage behind a curtain and there were two of these gofers waiting for him because they wanted to take a photo with him. While a third person took the photo, he stood in between the two women and had a hand on each of their butts. He squeezed hard and said he was a big fan of theirs. Then they said something like he was their inspiration for going to this bible based university and he said they should meet up that night and he would show them some inspiration as he hugged and groped them. Honestly I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. So, later that night there was a party for the 40 or so invited celebrities. It was in this hotel ballroom. Part of a ballroom. The number of people was about 150 total so the hotel was only using one section of the ballroom. Sure enough, the guy walks in with those two students from earlier. No one even bats an eye that this self proclaimed very religious, happily married man came in with these two women who apparently he had taken back to his room earlier and had sex with is with them now. He proceeds to paw them throughout dinner and is openly doing lines of coke at the table. It was crazy. He took them into the next ballroom which was closed off from the part where the dinner was and apparently had sex with them because when he came back he said something to the effect of the coke was messing with his Viagra and he had trouble sealing the deal. He started drinking and getting louder. He got angry at the two women for something and told them to leave. A short time later he staggered out of the ballroom. The next morning, bright and early, there was our subject up on a dais with several other people telling the audience about hard work and values and blah blah blah. Meanwhile he is wiping his nose like crazy every five seconds. That afternoon I saw him out by the pool. He was actually in the hot tub and he was making out with some woman older than the college students by about a decade. His hands were inside her top and he was drinking straight from a bottle of vodka. I wondered to myself if he was like this at home or just was super staid at home and only let loose when he was away from home. Then, I also realized he was probably gone from home over half the days each year doing his thing and that if he partied like this every night he was away from home, he was going to die an early death. One of the questions asked most of me is which celebrities are horrible people. Coming in a close second is who is the nicest or the variation of someone seems nice, but are they nice. I know it might not seem like it from the blinds, but the vast majority of celebrities are really nice and understand fans make their fame and will stop what they are doing and interact with a fan. Eliminating celebrities who are friends of mine or who you would not guess, I will tell you who I think is the nicest celebrity I have met. Even though I have hung out with her multiple times, I wouldn’t say we are friends. We know each other and see each other from time to time. She is A list. OK, maybe A- list. She is an Academy Award winner/nominee. One time we were walking through Beverly Center and if she stayed out in the main area she would literally get stopped every twenty feet. Then when she would stop, people would see what the commotion was and that would create a bigger crowd. When I say crowd, I am talking 5 or 6 people, but it was pretty constant. This was a few years ago when Beverly Center had their version of a dollar movie theatre. It took a good 30 minutes of walking from the middle of the mall to the end where the theatres were. The thing is, she never stopped smiling. Ever. Pictures, autographs as she slowly made her way to the theatre. When we got there and bought our tickets she could have bailed and waited inside a fairly darkened theatre and no one would have bothered her. But, she stuck it out in line for another ten minutes with a bunch of other people coming up to her and she just kept going and going. When we did get inside the theatre, she did acknowledge that it can be exhausting. She said that she loved the fans and would never say no to anyone, but that sometimes you just want to get from point A to point B and sometimes that was difficult. There was another time we were in this open area in between some buildings. Apparently some celebrity had been to the same spot 2 minutes earlier and had called in paps. They were hanging out waiting for the celebrity to come back out to get some more shots when they saw us. They swarmed which she does not usually get. In the midst of their swarming two families were trying to cross through the area and she went out of her way to go to them and apologize for all the commotion and chaos. She didn’t have to do it. I don’t think the families knew who she was but she did it anyway. I could go on and on about her, but she is the one celebrity I find to be the same all of the time. People perceive her to be sweet and kind and she is exactly those things and more. Emma Stone

There was a group of six of us having dinner and she came along with one of the six. I remember it was raining that night and the dinner lasted for hours because no one wanted to go out in the rain. Yes, we will melt if rain touches us here in LA. At that point, she was still in the music industry. I mean, she is today too, but her last success had been five years earlier and it was already in decline at that point. At the time of our dinner she said she was working on a new record. Singers always say that. It does not mean it will happen. In fact, it was another five years or so after that dinner before she released another record. It did awful. Her most recent record before the dinner did awful too. She was legal when she signed her first record deal. She didn’t get that deal though until she had sex with almost every guy on the label who wanted a turn with her. They didn’t beat around the bush with her. They said if you want to sign, you will need to have sex with any guy at the label who wants you. Sometimes these guys would have sex with three or four wannabe singers a day. During the recording of her first record she was told if she wanted the best songs and producers and promotion she would have to sleep with all of those people too. She did. She did everything they told her to do. That first record was a monster smash. It was huge. The record company made a ton of money off her and wanted another record as quickly as possible. Because they wanted it so quickly, they didn’t make her sleep with anyone. They didn’t want to take a chance on something going wrong. They just wanted to exploit her success. The second record came out really quickly and was a big success. Not a monster, but the record company still made a ton of money off her, of which she really never saw very much. The record company then wanted her to record a Christmas record and to do it quickly so again, they didn’t ask anything of her. This was not to say they weren’t screwing her over in every other way they could. Fast forward a year or so and after making a lot of money from her while she toured, the record label wanted a new record. Our singer thought it would be the same as it was for the second record and the Christmas record because she was a star now. Nope. She tried to protest but each time she did, they would suddenly give one of her songs to someone else on the label. She finally gave in to their demands, but waited so long and protested so much there was nothing much left on the record that could be considered a hit. Plus, she waffled on having sex with the promotional team. Her A list boyfriend wouldn’t step up for her. He said it was part of the game and he was doing the same thing to women he was signing or thinking about signing. The new record did well. It made the label money, but it really only did well in the US. When she said she would never sleep with anyone again at the label, they dropped her. When they did, no one would sign her. Also, the label put out the word that no one should do any projects with her which featured her even doing background vocals. Nothing. Fast forward two a couple of years before our dinner. She is basically out of money. She gets paid a fraction of what she used to get paid to perform. Plus, no one really wants her. She needs to do a new record. The thing is though, even though she was willing to have sex with whoever a new label said, they just were not all that interested in her any longer. One executive though said he liked our singer’s sister. So our singer offered her sister up and made her sister have sex with everyone. It took some time, but the record got made. It bombed though and no matter how much she begged or said she would sleep with someone, the label didn’t want her any longer because she wasn’t selling records. Her telling of this story took a good hour and a ton of names were dropped. If she wrote a book just about that hour conversation, it would rock the music industry. They arranged for him to go on the air and sing his new song to a massive radio audience and would even sponsor a show at a club which held a few hundred people. The station did it more for the manager who was A+ list. Our singer was soon to be A+ list, at least in the early part of his career. He is probably A- list now. Maybe B+ list. Catchy name which is what saves him. Anyway, my first encounter with him was when he walked around the corner of the stage at the club where this show was going to be held. He said he was hungry and was looking for a N word boy to cook him up some food. Yep. Just like that. A guy I worked with jumped down the singer’s throat and said that kind of language wasn’t acceptable. The singer replied something to the effect he was not in the KKK and didn’t mean anything by it. He was just having some fun. Uh huh. I assume he was also having fun when he started making racist Hispanic jokes and went back to the N word later when he told someone the only good N is a dead one. He was about to get the crap beaten out of him by at least a dozen people. The only reason they held back was they didn’t want to get fired or to give the club or radio station a bad name. At some point, the general manager of the radio station overheard yet another racist comment and talked to the singer’s manager. The manager was appalled. Probably. I know the manager and will give him the benefit of the doubt but he continued to represent the guy because money apparently is worth more than racism. The singer apologized. His very short set consisted of every stereotypical thing you could imagine. he had a jacket with a Confederate flag on the back and one was the backdrop behind his band. He said these things to people he didn’t even know. Can you imagine the things he said and did around people he felt comfortable with? To this day he still has not changed. Oh, he holds it together better around strangers but you get him around people he knows and what he says is even worse. Oh, before I forget. He divorce his second wife when he found out she once had sex with an Asian guy years earlier. Yep. He also told her if she tried to claim any alimony or anything like that, he would tell her parents she was sleeping with a lot of guys and that none were white. To me, it was important you saw it. It means a lot to me. Even though our subject is US born, most people in the US will be hard pressed to think of who our subject is, while people in Europe might get it in a second. While I write this, I am listening to her music. When I think about her, I am reminded of what a truly talented singer she could be. Honestly, I wish she could have sung a duet with Amy Winehouse just to see who could do better. I haven’t looked through every Amy Winehouse interview or her influences, but it wouldn’t shock me to see her mention the subject of our blind. Our subject used to be A list in her town but nowhere else. One of those performers who makes a ton of money at home, but would be forced to play for free on the road. One night, after a show, I had met with a group who was on the road and they wanted to see someone. I told them I knew the perfect person, but once they saw her perform, their life would change forever. People talk like that all the time. A lot of hyperbole. Not with our subject. Nope. If you saw her once, you remembered her forever. Her sets covered any kind of music being played in the world. No one could put her into one type of genre. Music was her genre. When she finished her set, I introduced her to the guys in this band. She now had huge fans and as usual there was talk of wanting to record with her. It was the same every night she performed. I asked her if she wanted to do a shot and she said she would but that in return I had to go help out at a food kitchen at 6 a.m. It sounded all good at that time of the night so I agreed. At 530 a.m. the phone rang and rang and when I finally answered it was her telling me to get my ass up and meet her there. There is where she went every morning. Well, most mornings. And when she finished making and boxing all the meals in the morning, she would spend a few hours delivering those same meals. This is the same person who never went to bed before 1 or 2 in the morning. The program had originally been designed to make and box meals to people with AIDS who were to ill to do it themselves. At this point in time, the drug cocktail was out, and things were changing, but AIDS patients were the main recipient. The program still exists, but now has shifted their focus to other people in need, including those who still need help and suffer from AIDS. I usually went down to help once a week or every other week. To be honest, it was usually only when reminded by our singer. She did a lot of reminding. She did a lot of wrangling. She did a lot of fundraising. She did so much wrangling, reminding and fundraising that the number of meals served tripled. She got all kinds of businesses on board. She hounded restaurants to have days where their proceeds would go to help the mission. Tireless does not begin to describe her. Until one day she was tired. Dying. Given a few months to live. In so much pain but she was there doing her best everyday. Until she couldn’t. Until the day the meals we made were for her and taken to her. The person you would do anything for. The person who would do anything for you and for strangers and do it with joy in her heart was the one in trouble. The one who died of cancer. The one who achieved her greatest professional success after she died. The one who only went number one after she died. The thing is, for those who knew her and those who loved her and those who were thankful for what she did each day, she was always our number one. This is not true in all cases, but it happens enough to the point where there is some correlation. What is that correlation? You are more likely to be a self centered jerk if you are a one hit wonder. What is crazy is that at least in my experience, the jerkiness is in place before the verdict is in whether they or he or she will have another hit. My belief is they know they got lucky. Deep down inside they know they got lucky and don’t have anything like that in them again. Maybe a friend wrote the song or someone who was in the band for just a brief moment. You can usually spot that kind of thing by looking at the rest of the record. Does that one song sound completely different than anything else on the record. I don’t know why it is, but there are much more male one hit wonder jerks than female. Anyway, here are some of the one hit wonder a-hole moments I have witnessed.

#1 – This one hit wonder group from a few years ago was 100% a-hole. I actually hated the song and was glad it didn’t make number one. It did make the top 5 though. They were already pricks before the song, so this just made things worse. While their song was on the way up the charts they had a photo shoot on a yacht here in LA. They wanted to make the most of it and invited a bunch of women. The yacht maybe went a mile off shore. It wasn’t much. Apparently there was one woman there who didn’t want to have sex with any of the guys in the band so they grabbed her and threw her overboard. She couldn’t swim. And you know what? They didn’t care. Several people rescued her and the a-holes told the rescuers they shouldn’t have rescued her and she was probably lying about not being able to swim and she deserved to go overboard because who comes out for this kind of thing who doesn’t want to have sex with a guy in the band.

#2 – This next a-hole didn’t quite crack the top 20. Famous name. Famous family. They were probably a-holes too. Our one hit wonder is the "featuring" on this song. The main singer all of you know. Seriously. Anyway, our a-hole was on a flight from LA to New York. He was in Business Class and seated next to this teenage girl who was maybe 15. She was traveling alone, but I never figured out her circumstances. Whether she was an actress or did an upgrade or what. Anyway, before the place even takes off, he is offering her booze. She said no. In the air he is offering her more booze and some kind of pill he was crushing and snorting. She said no. He is getting more wasted and more aggressive. When she keeps saying no, he goes into a rant about she thinks her p***y is too good for him or is she some f**king lesbian because everyone wants to suck his d**k and that she should feel lucky he is even talking to her. It starts getting louder and the girl is literally shaking and crying. Turns out there was a marshal on the flight. He talks to our a-hole and moves him to the opposite side of the plane for the rest of the flight. A flight attendant sat with the teen the rest of the flight. Nothing happened to the a-hole. They made him wait until after the teen left the plane before he could get his stuff but no charges were filed and he was never even detained.

PART ONE: Over the past decade that I have been doing this, from time to time I have been offered recordings. Either for sale, or sometimes for no other reason that people just don’t want the responsibility for hanging on to what they have. Most of those recordings I still have in my possession. I don’t have any desire to see things in the videos released. Most of the videos are not sexual. None were stolen or hacked. The vast majority of the recordings are celebrities doing a wide variety of drugs and they let themselves be recorded doing so. I do have a couple of recordings of celebrities having sex. I also have some recordings that combine sex and drugs. One of the recordings no longer in my possession is what this blind is about. This was almost a decade ago. I was at a party with some friends. Nothing crazy. It was a birthday party and the location of the house where we were celebrating was chosen because you could walk to a lot of clubs. No Uber back then. But, it was close enough where everyone could stumble back to this house. At the club, the first person I saw was this at the time A- list mostly television actress. A+ list name recognition. All of you know her. She is probably B+ list or even B now because she does not act much any longer. The thing is though she still has A+ list name recognition. She was at the club because the individual with the birthday was one of her best friends. I could tell the actress was not much of a drinker. She gave it a shot and after drinking for just a little while, you could tell why she was not much of a drinker. She got drunk quick. I mean within 45 minutes she was barely able to stand. I guess it had been her plan to stay at the club until her actor boyfriend could get there and they would leave together. He was still going to be a couple of hours, so two of us came up with the bright idea we would support her and keep her moving for the short walk to this house we were using as a base for that night. It may or may not surprise you to know that this was about my 20th time helping some celebrity out of a spot where you didn’t want to be seen by anyone in that condition. Especially her. She played off that goody goody image big time. She would not want the world to see her drunk. The only tricky spot we were going to have to worry about was by the front door and the people lined up. We managed to just kind of dwarf her to the point it almost didn’t look like there was anyone between us. When we got through the crowd it was just a matter of basically carrying her to the house. We arrived, and the key that was supposed to be under the mat wasn’t there. So, I was left alone with her while the other person ran back to the club and got the key to the place. It was sometime in early spring when this happened and it was kind of cold at night. I think the night air sobered her up a little. Not much, but just a little. We started talking and I said I or someone would let her boyfriend know where she was and to pick her up at the house. She then asked me for my phone number. I asked her if she wanted me to put it in her phone but she said no. Just to write my number down and give it to her. I did. She then handed me her phone and told me to keep it until she called me for it. At that point, the other person arrived back with the key and we carried the actress into the house and put her on the couch. We put a blanket over her and went back to the club.
PART TWO: My friend and I returned back to the club, the phone of the actress safely in the back pocket of my pants. Beginning about an hour after we got back to the club, my butt starts vibrating. A lot. I had forgotten about the phone until then. I didn’t forget about it again. The actress specifically told me she would call my phone when she wanted her phone back. When I looked down at the phone it said the name of her boyfriend. I debated picking it up, but she had been pretty clear about her instructions. It was the only time she appeared relatively coherent the entire night. The thing is, I didn’t want to press ignore and I didn’t want to mess with the settings on her phone to take it off vibrate. I was afraid I would accidentally answer it. I was also scared to sit with it in my back pocket for fear my butt would answer it. So, for the next three hours until the battery finally died I watched a vibrating phone be called 142 times. That missed number just kept climbing. Interestingly enough, the boyfriend never left a voice mail or sent a text. He just kept calling and calling and calling. Meanwhile, my phone was silent. I knew she had my number. I also told myself that she could contact the birthday person and get my phone number that way. When her phone finally died I realized just how tense the whole thing had been with those calls. When they stopped, I got hammered. Instead of going back to the meetup house I decided to cab home. The next day was a Saturday. I never left the house. Not because of a hangover but because I didn’t want to go do anything and be forced to interrupt my day when the actress eventually called me for her phone. The whole day and night went by and I didn’t hear from her. Not a peep. At some point that night I wondered if I should try and contact her through our mutual friend, but decided it could wait until Sunday. So, Sunday morning about 10 she gives me a call. She asks me to meet her at a restaurant and offers to buy me brunch for my trouble. I never turn down free food and this place she wanted to meet has one of the best buffet brunches, so I was in. An hour later, I handed her the phone and started eating. A lot. One thing about me is that I am not shy when it comes to food. You can be an actress who never eats and can sip a glass of water for two hours but I am still going to eat in front of you. A lot. This particular actress did eat. No carbs, but she ate. We were seated outside which is where you want to sit if you don’t want anyone to notice you. People do, but only the people who are seated next to you. You don’t want to be a celebrity and be inside on a walking path between a table and the buffet. I once watched Steve Buscemi take an hour to eat one omelette because he had to keep stopping to take selfies or sign autographs for fans. It was during award season when that happened and I tend to find my way there at that time of the year to see if I can spot anything. I told myself that he would never sit in that spot again. I was wrong. One week later he was in the same exact spot and the same exact thing happened to him. Maybe he liked the attention. Anyway, back to the outside and our actress. I came back with a massive plate of food. She waited until I sat down and with that smile she does so well, she said, "So, what did you think of it?" I had no idea what she was referring to. Did she mean all the missed calls from the boyfriend? I asked her and she said, "I know you must have looked at it. I would have." I had no clue what she was talking about. I told her so. She asked me over and over for the next five minutes if I was sure I had not seen what was on the phone. I told her about all the missed calls and that the phone died and I hadn’t touched it since. I did charge it for her, but never turned it back on after it died. I think she finally believed me. She said the reason she believed me was because of the way I was looking at her. I still had no idea what she was talking about. I had turned down a drink when I sat down, but I was regretting that now. She turned on her phone and when it powered up, she did some things and then turned the phone towards me. What I saw was her having sex with a guy. She was on top, fully topless by the way and the guy, who you couldn’t see was holding the camera up while our actress orgasmed. Loudly. She let me watch about 15 seconds of it before pulling it back. I told her that I had definitely not seen that before. Apparently the guy in the video was not her boyfriend. It was a guy she was seeing on the side and thinking of a way to tell her boyfriend it was over. Her boyfriend was being crazy jealous the past few weeks and knew something was up and was acting like a stalker. She knew that if she was passed out drunk, he would go through her phone. At night when she was sleeping she would keep it under her pillow, but she knew during a drunk induced sleep, he would pull it out and she would never know. So, she gave it to me. She said the only reason she did was that since I was a lawyer I probably wouldn’t go try selling it. I think at some point during the brunch I was looking her way and she said, that was how she expected me to look if I had seen the video. I hadn’t acted that way so she believed me and that was also the reason she showed me the video rather than just telling me. I didn’t ask about the guy or the boyfriend. We just ate and talked about other stuff. She broke up with the boyfriend the next week and eventually the guy in the video too. About two months later, maybe a little more I ran into her at the same place. I think it was Easter. She was with some members of her family going in while I was leaving. I walked straight up to her without her really noticing me. She was talking to a family member. I said, "Excuse me. I don’t mean to bother you, but do you think I could borrow your phone for a minute or two." During the first part of that sentence as she was turning and focusing on me, I think she thought the last part of the sentence was going to be asking her for a photo or an autograph. So, when her brain registered the last part of the sentence you could see by her facial expression that she was not expecting it but then she focused in on me and a fraction of a second later smiled that smile of hers and laughed while she said, "F**k off." I turned around and started walking out and I could hear her family member asking what that was all about and the actress telling the family member they wouldn’t want to know.
