The Dancing Boy Returns: Hi all. It’s been a while, I know. And a lot has happened, not least the dawning realization that I am the son of two undiagnosed narcissists - not unlike a certain gen x former child actor whose struggles with that/estrangement from them are well known (and very sympathetic) as well as a certain millennial former child actor well known in these parts (and not from the Mouse) - and the end to my denial about the extent of the abuse I experienced coming up. You see: it didn’t all begin during my month-long absence from school and normal life (to the extent that’s ever the case being the child of two narcissists) in early 1988. And what I described on set was not the worst that occurred with these people. I mean, it’s hard to pick a worst, but that was an attempted assault - not the worser things that occurred previously (why do you suppose I was pre-cast in that movie? because of what I had to do at 13…), or when these two other kids from the agency helped me “escape” from the hospital. But I’ll tell you when it started - at least clearly in a work and career context, and I was fully aware of it. (When I was nine, I collided with this other kid’s teeth at soccer practice, just above one eye - I still have the scar - and there was a blood clot. The Hollywood doctor I believe to be at the center of all this - he was from Afghanistan - swooped in with a group of medical students and turned my surgery into a spectacle. I can’t prove any of it, but I believe…something happened, and it would have been captured on tape.) The first time I remember? I was ten, and playing the kid with the blanket in a west coast tour of that musical. Our chaperone - who was also my agent - called me over when he was checking us into the hotel in this one central California city. He had heard me swearing on the bus - which was not allowed - and otherwise acting out, and told me he didn’t want me to be a bad influence on the other kids, one of whom was an actor many of you will know. (You’ll see who this is when the movie comes out. He’s also in it as an adult.) So I would have to “bunk with him.” Keep in mind here that the grooming had been going on almost from the beginning. After I got “discovered” at the school play, age 7, my first job was a commercial for this mall opening in southern California. There was this stampede of people - adults and kids - swarming the place, and I had a close up where I’m spinning around, my arms out, saying: “this place is amazing!” They had me do it like eleven times, and I was so dizzy by the end of it I fell over. But it was fun. And I was on tv. (My sister was like: it’s bad enough we have to see him in person all the time. Does he really have to be on the tv set too?) My second job? Modeling clothes for a back to school sale circular for one of the big chains - you can probably guess which one. There were doofy boy clothes - I remember a Hawaiian shirt, in particular - but no one told me ahead of time that it wouldn’t just be…outerwear. After I had changed into them, I was shaking so bad the photographer’s assistant had to literally put me in the pose they wanted. Also: I remember it being extremely cold in the studio (you wonder if they did that on purpose). And when I asked my agent if I could opt out of that in the future, he said, basically, that if I start turning down jobs everyone would think I’m a diva (he didn’t use that word because no one did - he spoke like a school marm, which you’ll see) and no one would hire me. So, there were other of those jobs too. This is something you absolutely don’t want the kids at your school to find out about. And you can be sure that that ad or page from the catalog or whatever will be literally passed around by all the kids. I should also mention at this point that this was the Hollywood shop - the agency, I mean - that made all the kids dress up in church clothes, basically, for auditions and shoots. People I think thought we were Mormons, or something. (Over time I’d come to call this my preppy dork uniform, and the really messed up part about it is that it really is my style to this day. They had this creepy way of figuring out who you were even before you did.) And in a certain way it probably wasn’t a bad idea. I mean: are you more or less likely to give the role to an extremely polite kid dressed like a choir boy? (There was also a list of twelve rules we had to memorize. Do you know what number 1 was? Always do exactly what the director asks of you. We had to say this in unison in acting class.) Also: this shop was extremely sex segregated. (You can maybe kind of see why the parents loved all this. Your previously bratty kid is now a little angel who calls adults sir and ma'am, and voluntarily washes the dishes and cleans his room, and dresses like it’s Sunday morning. We were told to do all that.) But behind our backs the men called us Simons - as in Simon from Lord of the Flies. These were the sweet, vulnerable, and compassionate ones who could cry on command, and melt the hearts of adults. We were the designated child sacrifices. (Remember: as your 9th grade English teacher said, Simon was the martyr figure, mistaken for the Beast by the other boys, and murdered.) Before my first meeting at the agency, I could hear my soon-to-be agent talking to another one, and the latter saying (of me): that one is definitely a Simon. When we got up to the hotel room, my agent/chaperone lifted my suitcase and put it on his bed. He tried to open it and it was locked. He asked me why. I told him it was because I didn’t want anything stolen. He said in his experience the only boys who kept locked suitcases were the ones trying to smuggle contraband: their father’s whiskey, cigarettes, drugs. (I barely even knew what drugs were.) He demanded the code and I gave it to him. He opened the suitcase and rifled through my things, finding nothing but my clothes. Well, he said, you’ve made a liar out of me for once. He promised to order me ice cream from room service after the performance - which was a private thing for the trustees and donors of this one theater. This turned out to be a blessing because the sound system in the theater wasn’t working right, and we all had to shout our lines. My voice was scratchy and my throat sore. I just wanted to go to sleep. But when I opened my suitcase the Star Wars pajamas I expected to find weren’t there. What are you looking for? he asked. My pajamas, I said. Maybe your mother forgot to pack them for you, he said. I thought I saw them in there this morning, I said. He got up, annoyed, and went through my suitcase. They’re obviously not in here, he said. You must have forgot them. I guess I’ll have to sleep in my clothes, I said. And who is going to iron them tomorrow morning, and with what? I shrugged. I don’t like my boys looking like wastrels (he really used that word, as if this was like a real life version of Oliver!) You can sleep in your underwear, he said. We’re all men here. So I took off my sweater vest - I strangely remember this: it was argyle - and my tie and dress shirt. Then I got under the covers and took my pants off. Have you brushed your teeth? he asked. No. Well, no one wants to hire an actor with foul breath and rotten teeth. So, I got up and went to the bathroom and brushed my teeth. When I came back into the room, I could tell that he was looking at me out of the corner of my eye. I got into bed and turned off the light. I fell asleep. Maybe an hour later - I don’t really remember - I woke up to the lights on and him sitting on the edge of my bed, staring down. His breath reeked of booze. You’ve been a very naughty boy, he said. Do you know what happens to naughty boys? At this moment I was actually relieved, because I thought he was “just” going to spank me, as he had a few days earlier after the first performances in LA. (A couple of the other boys and I had gone off down the block to this video game arcade without permission. After they found us, we had to wait outside his hotel room, and one by one we were called in. You could hear what was happening - what was about to happen to you. Afterward, we had to sit in the hall as an example to the other kids. We were all crying.) I’m not going to spank you this time, he said, placing his hand you-know-where. It’s the pilot for a new series, dancing boy-related, and it will feature the first-ever filmed meeting of our support group - the one for former dancing boys, I mean. I will be telling my story - you’ll get to see who some of the other ones are (including some of the big timers) - and it will also include some footage from the past, and dramatic reenactments. Also, my name is not my stage name. I’ll let you all know when it’s up on imdb. I guess you may be wondering if I told anyone about the first time it happened, and I did - either that night or the next (can't remember which it was, but I know it was back stage...so I was either there that night hanging out and not performing, or it was the next night). It was this other boy Mark, who I was friends with and trusted. Unbeknownst to us though the chaperone was in the bathroom inside the dressing room - for an extremely long time, I'll add, and when he came out he had one of those boy actor magazines like Tiger Beat. He'd heard the whole conversation. And you can guess what happened that night - now we were both troublemakers. The day after that we ran off to the bus station, which is where they found us. I don't know exactly what we were planning to do, because they only allowed you to have like twenty dollars on you at any time. The chaperone told us that we'd both lose our careers if we pulled that kind of stunt again, or told anyone. And did I really want to disrespect and disappoint my father that way. Mark's situation was even worse. His family was not well off and depended on the money he made. Mark's story doesn't end well. In high school times I found out he was hit by a car, and suffered a severe brain injury. To this day I wonder if he didn't walk into traffic.

G******* P***: A Dancing Boy Story: When a homeless man dies - including in this one major city (NYC) - it doesn’t typically make the news. But when a homeless man dies in this one way - much to the horror of onlookers - it tends to make the news. What wasn’t reported? He was…a dancing boy. His death, and the events preceding it, are the subject of a double episode of the forthcoming series, entitled (and this is a place name, highly local) G******* P*** (“Gramercy Park“). In his last months, he was living in a squat in a previously notorious neighborhood - it’s surprising, really, that there are any vacant or derelict buildings left there. But there are, and I know because I’ve been there. Who else has been there? The one former child superstar of two from the last dancing boy blind item, Truth or Dare. Is he an addict too? Nope. He was there in the opposite capacity - to urge this man and his fellow former dancing boys there (who were more well known for this one type of acting, associated with one coast more than the other) to get clean. And the sad part is that they really did have reason to this time. You see: they had all left acting by the time they finished high school, determined to have normal lives. But after all the abuse that just wasn’t going to happen. And literally all of them - each in his own way - had tried to come forward about what had been done to them. And that had gone well for exactly none of them. Even the one who had support from the former mayor of this city - the one all of you will know - ended up sued by his own abuser for trying to go public. In the end, at that time, who was going to believe this former actor kid who was visibly high at the deposition and had a long list of priors for mostly petty crime: possession, shoplifting, conning tourists out of their money. He lost what little he had left. As a result, these men - who by recent times all lived together in this one squat - had a code of sorts: they didn’t talk to cops; they didn’t talk to lawyers; they didn’t talk to the media. So, what changed? He and they were visited by this one kind of cop - he was long aware of them and the allegations they had made, and thought they might be telling the truth. It’s just that he like they couldn’t previously prove it. (I’m told he was the person the one detective on the long running network series is based on.) Obviously, he wasn’t there to bust them - he just wanted to talk. And he knew that the newest and youngest member of their club of sorts - a millennial, new to the streets (and like the rest of them a surviving dancing boy) - would be mostly likely to hear him and his female partner out. Their instrument of persuasion? Chinese food. What had happened was that the feds picked up one of the principals - one of those who had abused all of them - in a trafficking and porn sting. In his possession were thousands of images and videos, some of which included all of these men…as boys. But what ought to have brought them together ended up driving them apart, leading to their own separate ends. Most of them, anyhow. The ringleader - this is the man mentioned at the start (who will played by me in the dramatic reenactment of these men’s final weeks; we also play ourselves, as this is, you know, reality tv) - who had already lost his marriage and custody of his son, and would soon lose the latter relationship too. (I can hardly write this, but the boy literally believed that his father - who he hadn’t seen in close to a decade - had some kind of noble secret life, that he was a super hero of sorts. The boy was so confident in his conviction that he brought along his girlfriend to meet his dad after he turned 18. But all he found out was that his mother was telling the truth all along: that his father was a serially abused former child actor turned homeless addict who had effectively abandoned the family.) I’m friends with the ex-wife/mother - who wishes to remain anonymous (she had acted as well and like her late ex-husband wanted and wants nothing to do with any of that) - and one of the things she told me is that four or five years ago she was cleaning out her son’s room, and found a box of tapes under his bed - videotapes. Concerned they might be porn, she watched one of them, and was astonished to find out they were videos…of the boy’s father - a compendium, basically, of much of the filmed work he had done as a child. Where did he get them? The internet, of course. This is what her late husband told her - she’ll be played btw by my high school friend (the one then on the network series): in the earlier years of the internet, he’d searched for himself online, and found numerous links to auction sites and craigslist ads selling this type of video. And he knew right away these weren’t being traded by the now grown up fans of him and other kids. Because he knew that any number of the letters he had gotten coming up weren’t actually from girls and sometimes boys around his age - they were from men. Yes: he is very much a dancing boy, having done that dance in front of his middle school class on a short-lived sitcom more than a decade ago; this is the episode about the highly communicable childhood illness. Insta-Actor, or How I Became Bunny: A Dancing Boy Story: Some of you know something about how I became an actor, but that isn't the whole story, which is actually kind of...funny. Roughly two minutes after my birth, my parents were already shouting at each other about whether or not my father would be allowed to get me into modeling. My father won that argument...for a short time. Because on one of the first shoots - this was for a brand of diaper - one of the men present wanted to put cocaine on my gums; I was teething. My mother was furious and held a retirement party for me the next day. Then, in kindergarten - where I often got into trouble - I staged a chicken run of sorts, involving...my entire class. We had grievances, you understand, such as: having to sit still for more than five minutes, the truly lousy cafeteria food (which tasted like jail, or at least how you imagined that), the lack of fizzy drinks. So I delivered an impromptu speech on top of the picnic rallying the kids. They'd all give me their lunch money, and we'd meet up at thirteen hundred hours. In the meantime I'd go to the Ralphs and spend all that money on...candy. We had quite the candy feast that day. But of course you probably aren't going to get away with that. I spent a good hour in the "thinking chair"  (this was a chair in the principal's office with a belt to strap naughty children in) before my parents showed up. The principal suggested they get me into an acting class as a more healthy outlet for all that...energy. My mother screamed at my father the whole way home (when she wasn't screaming at me, I mean), but that's what happened. Our first performance was Peter Rabbit. (You'll see that in the screen saga my code name is Bunny. This is why.) At first I just kind of sat there bored and daydreaming, having to listen to the other kids - most of who were a little older - brag about how they were in this or that commercial, or had some bit part in a movie. But then, one day, something happened - something magical. We were rehearsing that scene where Peter gets lost in the garden. I said my lines and the teacher stopped me. She said: you're just saying the words. You need to feel them. Think of a time you were afraid and alone. And I thought of the time, just a year earlier, I fell into the pool and nearly drowned. I was surrounded by my parents' drunk and coked up Hollywood friends - this was at one of their frequent parties - and at least at first no one noticed. I said my lines again, and this time I started to cry. And when I was done I looked over at my teacher and she was crying too. She came over and pinched my cheek and said: you are great. I had discovered...my superpower. Fast forward nearly two years. I'm in the second grade now, and we are being sent home with a flyer about the forthcoming school play. It was Peter Pan. I get into my mother's Jaguar and hand it to her, saying nothing. That's nice, she said. Do you want to see it when they put it on? I nodded my head no. What is it you want, she said. I said nothing. You want to try out for it, don't you. I shook my head yes. She rolled her eyes and said: I'll talk to your father, who being the grandiose narcissist, was delighted. (My mother is of the covert type - actual success is for some reason a bad thing with these people. Unless you are truly pitiable, you are not sympathetic.) I auditioned for the lead role, and despite being younger than the recommended age, got the part. (My mother sat in the car during rehearsals because she was convinced that they were going to drop me on my head or something during the flight scenes.) As I said in the very first dancing boy blind item - back in January, 2018 - my future agent was in the audience with his girlfriend - the mother of one of my classmates, who was also in the play, and an aspiring actor. He was already representing him. What I didn't say was that later that school year the boy and his mother vanished. One day he was in school and the next day he was not. I think she discovered what was taking place with this man and her son, and literally just packed up the car one day and left.

Truth or Dare: A Dancing Boy Blind Item: This story takes place later in high school - after the movie, after (I hoped) the worst of the abuse, after I was released from my contract with the Agency (or rather "released:" you're not out of danger, just no longer getting work from them) - when I was dating the daughter of this one studio exec (the one honored at a recent but not this or last year's Oscars memoriam). As it happens, she was also dating the youngest son of the legendary franchise creator (by now I was living in Less Than Zero world - I always was, but just not... knowingly). He was still alive at the time, but would be dead before too long. (You'll note a similar appearance between the Canadian actor referenced in this story and an American one recently referenced - the latter's character was named after the creator in the series then currently airing.) The setting? It was a Friday night, or maybe it was a Saturday. It was, in any event...a party (at the son's house). (I had come with not just my/his girlfriend but another girl from our school, who I know I've mentioned in the past. She was on a series at the time - the one with the girl whose father appears in voice only.) Practically the first thing I see is this one female actor - a teen, obviously, more known then for being a good girl (because of all the family time stuff), but soon to be known for being a bad girl (because of her role on this one series) - extremely wasted and randomly bearing her top half to boys in attendance, including me. She soon disappeared into one of the rooms with the scion of an extremely large American fortune, who himself had recently performed with few clothes on in this one movie (or at least that was most of the young cast, anyhow). Also present - on the sofa, I mean, and making out with...another boy - was the girl's former screen kid brother.  The other boy was someone you would all know, but I'm not going to identify him because I don't think he ever came out as bisexual. There were other kids from my school there, and some of the others - rich brats, mostly, from the two that would soon become one, the more hippie one in Santa Monica, and literal Less Than Zero High - but I didn't know most of the people. But it was a reunion of sorts for the probably two biggest young actors of the previous decade - one of whom I had known since grade school, and had dated my sister in jr high (he was in the kitchen making salad for some reason); the other I would soon get to know (he's the one from the movie) - who you'll recognize in part for a basic physical difference: this one color. (I would find out later that my mentor - this one Hollywood conservative, who had introduced us when I was 7 - had asked the first one to look out for me that night, and while he was completely sober was also completely oblivious to the events that follow, because he was busy...watching the game.) This person (the mentor, I mean) had recently helped me get a role in a pilot for this afternoon series - the kind the one network didn't at the time have. My co-star and I - I'll get to him in a second (this is the Canadian) - were playing young actors recruited into this secret global elite: teen superheroes, basically. (It was the whole alienation at the top thing - superherodom, like Hollywood, is a lonely place.) It was ultimately passed on by the very famous exec for being "unrealistic" but you'll see some footage from it in the forthcoming one hour episode. I will tell you who this other actor is, but I first should confess that I was already aware of him because of this one movie - made for tv in 1987, a joint production between the one cable network and the CBC. In it he plays this kid who has gotten in with the wrong crowd, and is framed for a crime, ending up in juvie. I sat and watched the whole thing before school, clutching my backpack in my lap in rapt attention. I thought: wow, this is really good and he's really good too. Also: he's pretty cute. So, who is he? (Oops. I think I just said so, basically.) I'm sure I had seemed stand-offish at rehearsals - I was, you know...interested - but with a few cocktails and a few lines of coke in me (the doctor would find out about this from my mentor and was not...happy) that was less of a problem. So we sat down in this one room (a lounge or study or something) and we kind of hit it off: that his family was from eastern Europe, and all the stuff they'd been through, how he got into acting (the parents), and all that. (I could also tell though that he didn't like that I was drinking and using.) But who should show up? Gatecrashers of a certain kind - a couple of kids from...the Agency. They barge in through the French doors - one of them has a camcorder - and one says: long time no see dancing boy. The other whispers in my ear: we know you like him. They tell me I owe them a game of truth or dare - this would've been from Junior High times, when I chickened out of playing that with these people at one of the Agency parties - and the one whispers in my ear again: we'll tell him if you don't play. So...I agree to play. Truth or dare, which is it? the one says. I by this point know full well what the truth would be - that I'd have to admit my interest in this other boy - and despite the booze and coke it still seemed sufficiently mortifying that I blurted out...dare. This is when the one with the camcorder starts filming me, and says: do the dance you did on set - that's the dare. Come on you guys, I said - that isn't nice. You know what happened. Your choice, one of them said. I'm sure I was shaking by now, but I undressed to my underwear and started to dance, making eye contact with this other boy just long enough to see the look of confusion and concern in his eyes. But it wasn't like the first time, because this time I was...rescued. My female actor friend and her former co-star - this is the second of the two kid superstars, and the one I didn't know then - storm into the room, and seize the camera, removing the tape. Why Can't We Film Her Crotch?: This was the question the famed writer/director (John Hughes) put to the producer (Ned Tanen) the day he filmed the one literally under the table scene (“The Breakfast Club”). The answer was basically the same he got in a slightly earlier production (“Sixteen Candles“), when he wanted the girl’s screen father to return this one thing to her (her panties). Maybe none of this is surprising. After all the daddy’s girl jokes were kind of persistent for a while with him. What most people to this day don’t know though is that he was extremely fond of this one drug (cocaine) - the one favored by high earning professionals in the not Second City during that same decade. He did lots and lots of it, including on set, which sometimes made him delusion, and prone to gross ideas. Why do you think he was legendary for starting and finishing scripts over a long weekend? Why do you think he gained all that weight when he stopped? Sadly, he'd probably have lived longer if he'd never started. Maybe you guessed it, but there is in fact more to that story - and all of it involves the one production. For one thing, young people of a certain age are known to be both easily bored and kind of listless sometimes. It’s doubly so for young actors of a certain age who are working and going to school full time. That is why the director took this one young actor (Anthony Michael Hall) aside  - to the dressing room, in fact - and made him do large amounts of his favored drug. Or, at least that was the official reason. The real reason is the usual one: because he could. Needless to say, the young actor’s screen character would probably never have done this. What’s more? When the director was told he couldn’t film the one thing, an assistant was sent…to the high schools…to find a suitable substitute. Not wanting to end up in jail, he went to the local junior college instead, and found a barely legal girl. I’m told the young woman wasn’t paid for her work, except in the director’s favored drug, and…an encounter with one of the actors (Emilio Estevez). This is the one known for his character’s extracurricular pursuits (I mean I guess they all were - the booze, the drugs, the mall, the math problems - but it wasn’t any of those: his screen self probably wasn’t going to college without it). You know what else? When the actor was leaving to meet up with her, the director handed him a camcorder and said: you know what to do with it. But he didn’t, in fact, do that. Instead, he cut the tape with a knife before the two had even undressed. That was all the director got to see: two young adults…talking. Thirteen, Part 1 - A Dancing Boy Story: Or rather twelve - that’s when this story begins. By then the abuse was frequent, and involved multiple people - not just with the agency. And you know what traffickers do sometimes, don’t you? They brand you. Which is exactly what happened. I still have the tattoo on my arm - a barcode, which you’ll see - and the branding mark, which you won’t (because of where it is). The latter one hurt like hell for days. I wore a bandage to cover up the tattoo. In their paranoia, the agency sent this one kid my age to live in my hometown with his parents - they had turned him. He was the one who told my 7th grade classmates about what had been happening to me, and to prove it once pantsed me in front of the entire school at lunch. (This is how confident they were of getting away with it, or at least how confident they wanted to seem to me. And it did seem that way…for a long time.) But he was only sent to check up on me because their first attempt had failed. This is my friend T. T and I were the same age too, and repped by the same people then. (His parents - who you’ll know in a moment - got him out of there by high school. I never asked why, but I think I know.) We were introduced by our respective agents because we were about to be in a production together - it was just a local/regional thing but kinda fun (largely because T) - and we would soon be starting at the same school. When his mother dropped him off at my house the first time to rehearse (which we didn’t actually do much of), she was quite pregnant…with a daughter. She would be named A. And yes: this is someone you all know. (Remember: this was the mid 80s; she would be a big star in a decade or so. Her twin diagnoses - the latter one she only just spoke to the media about late last year - are the same as mine.) Their last name? B. At one point that afternoon T closed my bedroom door and with his back to me said: they’re trying to check up on you you know. I figured that, I said. I wouldn’t do it for them, he said. Thank you, I told him. That night, like practically every one, would be pure hell. I barely slept anymore because I was afraid of waking up with a man at the edge of my bed, or in it. I was afraid of not waking up at all. See: they get you in your sleep, in your dreams. Nightmare on Elm Street is almost…a true story. And when I was able to sleep I’d started to wet the bed - something I hadn’t done since early in grade school. I’d rode my bike to the mall and bought several sets of identical sheets because I was so afraid of being found out. I rarely went to sleepovers then. To make myself feel better, I’d started stealing booze and pills - first from my father’s liquor cabinet, and my parents’ medicine cabinet, and then from the parents of my friends, including T. One day after school, when T and I were playing basketball at his house, I went inside to use the bathroom, but instead went into his parents’ and stole a handful of Xanax from his mother’s medicine cabinet. (His dad kept a shoebox full of weed under the bed too, which we smoked on occasion.) Of course, I was deathly afraid of his mother calling mine - my mother never believed my version of events, and they were good friends by then - but the call never came. What happened was worse. One morning a week or two later I woke up to my mother in the doorway, shouting at me. Why the hell are you not up and dressed for school? The carpool will be here in five minutes. I’m sorry mom - my alarm didn’t go off (I lied; in truth I’d taken two Xanax a few hours earlier and was still very much under the influence.) She came into my room, still visibly angry. What is that smell? She ripped the covers off my bed. Did you wet the bed? You’re twelve years old. What is going on with you? (To this day I can’t watch that scene in the Sixth Sense where Cole’s mom confronts him about stealing her mother’s pendant or whatever, because it reminds me of that morning.) That’s when I blurted it out - or at least, some of it. I didn’t name names, but I did say it was someone at the agency. I’m calling them right now, she said. My agent told her that this was a very serious allegation, and that he was required by law to report it to the police immediately. Was that what she wanted? I remember hearing the pause at her end. No, she said, I think I should take him to be evaluated by a child psychiatrist first. And guess who recommended one - supposedly the best in LA. I don’t remember her actual name, but I called her Lady Freud to myself. She was this older woman who spoke with a German accent. I was made to undress, and subjected to an hours-long physical and psychological evaluation, which included bending over an exam table with my underpants around my knees and her peering up my backside with what I think was a flashlight.  After all that, Lady Freud concluded I had issues around authority figures - I don’t remember the exact diagnosis/nonsense - and was envious of some of the other kids getting more work than I did. Also, she told my mother, these fell out of your son’s coat pocket when he was undressing. They were the Xanax. I’ve seen my mother angry many times, but never like that day. It lasted the whole way home: 45 minutes or an hour. I was made to apologize to T’s mother and would have to mow their lawn every weekend for like two months. Just not immediately though. The adults had…other plans. The next day - I knew something was wrong when I wasn’t sent to school - my father took me to my favorite pizza/sandwich place (which sadly closed during the pandemic), and gave me a…pep talk. Your career is still on track, he said - the agency is willing to overlook what happened - but you’re going to need to spend a little at this place where kids like you can get the help they need. It’s a setback, he said, not an end (as if that’s at all what was on my mind). And he was right…about one thing: the place, which had bars on the windows and locked doors 24/7 - was full of other actor kids. (I have never violated the confidentiality of any of them, but yes there were several you would know - all older, because with one fleeting exception, who was too crazy even for there, I was the youngest. It was up in the San Bernardino mountains, near Big Bear. At least I think it was - I slept most of the ride there. They came and picked you up in what was basically a police car, with doors you couldn’t open and a metal screen between the front and back seats. The man dangled a pair of handcuffs at me as I was getting in the car and said: don’t act up son, okay? Like the shrink, this place was recommended by…the agency. I believe this was the same place they sent the one young female actor, also aged 12, a couple years later. I'm only saying this because it's public knowledge.) At first, I wasn’t even allowed to go to the bathroom without someone watching. And they made me wear a freakin diaper at night. I didn’t talk at first in group - this was an act of quiet defiance - but then they punished me by not letting me out of my room during “free time.” Knowing that the truth wasn’t going to be believed, I started dropping regular loads of bs into everyone’s ears. I was stressed about having to work and also go to school. I didn’t like all the attention (this part was actually/partly true, because as I said you know who sends actor kids letters and gifts, and in some cases it isn’t other kids; one of these men had called my house persistently when I was 10 and 11). And yes: I was very, very jealous of all the other kids getting more and better work than I did. Also: could I please go home now? (This was the worst part about it: not knowing if/when you were ever going to be able to leave. By the time they did finally let me go - there was a courtyard in back but it had a high wall with bars at the top (this was the only way you could be outdoors) - it was a completely different group of kids. I was there about eight weeks.) And for the next year there would be weekly, random drug tests and breathalyzers (I had to go to the school nurse for this), I had to see Lady Freud every week, and I was on “probation” with the agency (whatever the hell that meant). But hey in the meantime they (the agency, I mean) sent some of the kids (including T and I) to Disneyworld with their families. When the year was finally over - I was thirteen by now, you understand - I was called into my agent’s office. He gave me a watch - which I have until this day - for staying clean the whole time. (That part wouldn’t last.) I’m so proud of you, he said, but you know you did cause us a whole world of trouble. I’m sorry, I said, looking away. When I told you a few years ago that you might one day get the lead role in a studio production, I wasn’t kidding. Do you know what’s happening with that now? I shook my head no. The script is in final rewrites, and they’re planning on shooting it in the next year or so. And you know who they want to star in it? He held up a picture of my headshot. That’s right, he said: you. But I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask a little favor of you. You see: the agency is a bit on the outs with this one executive (something about another one of the boys making trouble and costing a fortune for a recent production), and we’d like you (and this other boy) to spend an evening entertaining him at his home. Do I have to? I said. You don’t have to do anything, he said. But I was under the impression you wanted to be a star, and make a fortune, and maybe just maybe be America’s next teen idol. Thinking it would be just more of the same - what had already happened, I mean - I agreed. And was I ever wrong.

When the driver stopped for gas in the valley, I thought of getting out and running. But where was I going to go? And what would I tell my parents? At one point the driver lowered the inside window and told me I was the fourth boy he had driven to this address in the last month. (One of them, he said, was this then young actor you will definitely know. He may be a part of the dancing boy cast, and it is likely I will identify him at some point - but only with his permission.) Do these people have a son or something? I don’t know, I said. I’m sorry to tell you this, he said, but when I dropped one of the boys off and was cleaning out the car, the seat was wet. I was to go around the side of the house and enter through the servant’s entrance - apparently now I was “the help.” I was to wait on the bench there until I was summoned. I only realized after getting buzzed in that the door locked back…from the outside. When I got inside there was another boy my age - not on the bench, you understand, but pacing. I’d seen him around the agency before, but I didn’t know him. I can tell you one thing he was in - a certain weekend morning show, not animated, for kids. It was a "company" show. I’ve got a bad feeling about this, he said. I nodded, looking down at the floor. What do you think they’re going to do to us? he said. I shook my head, and handed him the driver’s number. Keep it for yourself, he said. Thanks, I said. And that’s when he threw up in the potted palm in the hall. A short time later the butler came - at least I think he was that (I’d only ever seen them on tv) - and told this boy it was his turn. As he was led away he looked back at me, already crying. And maybe fifteen or twenty minutes later the screaming started, so loud and full of terror there was no way anyone in that house could not hear it. (To be continued.)

 When the butler came for me, I was led toward the front of the house, and up the spiral staircase, then down the hall to this one bedroom. He unlocked the door and led me in, or rather pushed me. About all I remember of it is a lot of antiques - including a Persian rug - and that it smelled like a flower shop. Apparently this executive liked to have flowers around. I was told that there was only one rule for the evening, and that was to be a very, very good boy - because naughty boys would be punished. It was at that moment that he picked up what I thought was a cane, but was actually a wand of sorts - the kind you use to corral living…property. He discharged it in the air several times. I was made to undress and put on a clothing set of sorts - the kind just about all kids, including me, stopped wearing by the end of grade school (or face some serious humiliation in the locker room); apparently this was the man’s thing. Then I was told to lie across the bed and wait for him to come in; I was instructed to call him only daddy, or sir. The butler put my clothes in a bag and left with them. I could hear the door lock after he closed it. That’s when I felt something under the covers, and I pulled them back. It or rather they were something I had only seen once - in a catalog for adult products I found at the bottom of my parents’ bedroom magazine rack. How to put it? They’re used to keep someone…in place. I went to the bathroom, feeling nauseous, and kneeled in front of the toilet. That’s when I noticed a few drops of blood on the tile - the floor was shining, and smelled of ammonia. It had obviously just been cleaned. Apparently the maid…missed some of it. I heard the door unlock, and laid down on the bed again. My heart was pounding. But it was not the man - it was the butler. He had a tray with two pills, which I was instructed to take, and a wine cooler to wash them down. (One was mdma - which was illegal by then - and the other was almost certainly a muscle relaxant.) There was also a fruit cup, for some reason, which he left on the nightstand. Daddy will be in shortly, he said, leaving again, and locking the door behind him. (If you think about what I was made to wear, and what was under the covers, you kind of maybe get a scenario out of a certain kind of book - the kind with a lot of pictures, often read by children. I know it’s disturbing to hear, but that’s where this was going. And yes: the irony of there being a butler involved was not lost on me, especially given the exact theme of the clothing.) Much like the first time, it would last most of the night. But this time I was in agonizing pain by the end of it. And I couldn’t take my shirt off in front of anyone for weeks because of what was left on my back and sides - it seems I hadn’t been a good enough boy. Do you need to go to a hospital? the driver asked me when I got in the limo. No, please, I said - just take me home. I just want to go home, I said, covering my tear soaked face with my hands. In another year, I’d be watching those highly graphic auto safety movies - the ones where someone has literally just lost their legs and they’re telling the cop or paramedic they just need to get home to their mother. A lot of the kids laughed, and whistled. I did not, because I knew something they did not - something no child should ever know.
