It was because of a studio head’s vendetta against one of the front
runners and her husband/manager that the tie was broken. The two
actresses, an actress turned royal (who was the actual winner) (Grace Kelly) and a permanent A+
actress and singer (Judy Garland)
who you all know (who was the projected winner) were probably unaware
about the behind the scenes machinations, at least not from what I have
been told. The singer/actress was convinced the actress/royal slept
with someone to get her award. But that was her just trying to assign
blame for something that was out of their control. The singer/actress
and her husband/manager/possible mob affiliate (Sidney Luft) were hoping for a big
success on her comeback film. It was a remake of a Hollywood set story (“A Star Is Born”)
that was done twice before. She had been off the screen for four years
due to her personal problems and addictions plus her concert residency
on Broadway (“Palace Theater”)
which proved her staying power. The head of the studio (“Warner Bros.”) was warned
that she was going to pull the same stunts that eventually got her
canned from her last studio (“MGM“).
Yes she did pull those stunts: arriving to the set hours late and
sometimes under the influence of uppers/booze, being a complete
perfectionist in rehearsals so much so that she clashed with the
scriptwriters on numerous occasions, etc. Yes her delays caused the
budget to skyrocket but if you go back and read/listen to interviews
with her director (George Cukor)
and leading man (James Mason)
they have nothing but nice things to say about her. Her husband was
another issue. To promote the film the studio agreed to lend some props
and furniture for an Architectural Digest photoshoot for the singer’s
newly bought Holmby Hills mansion (144 S. Mapleton Drive, Holmby Hills, California 90024).
The husband knew a few guys in the prop department and money exchanged
hands to let the couple hang on to the decor for good. When the mogul (Jack L. Warner)
found out about this backhand deal he hit the ceiling. Nobody ever ever
took props and scenery home, not on his watch. The prop department
people were fired and he swore that the actress and her husband, who
had a multi picture deal with the studio and their production company,

throughout my growing up from the family bookshelf, displayed with its
front rather than side facing). You see: this was my father's fantasy -
not that he would become a famous theater critic for a major newspaper,
but famous by way of my success, and as my very own personal critic,
often ruthless. Because in his grandiose narcissist mind none of my
success was my own: it was all his doing. He was the star. I was the
trained monkey. I've spent my whole life toggling between two kinds of
codependency. There's the codependency of my covert narcissist mother,
where I am safe from my late father's shouting, smacking, and abusing,
but it's its own prison of shame and humiliation - an empathy desert;
for the prize of economic and emotional austerity, you spend your life
serving her own grandiose and fragile ego. (You wonder why former child
actors end up homeless, mentally ill addicts - this dynamic is just
about the leading reason. You run away from the stage parent - maybe
literally - and end up in a different kind of jail.) And there's the
codependency with my father - who isn't even alive anymore. (See:
you're so completely trained that it outlives their deaths.) I'd been
living in the codependency with my mother for many years, secretly
writing the story of my life - that was where I found connection, the
one redeeming and not toxic space in my life. But with the first
filming now months away, I was starting to panic: did I even know how
to act anymore? And the answer, sadly, is yes - not (in the sense of
sadly) because I lost my capacity for connection, but because of all
the crapola that goes along with it. I don't know how to be an actor
without living in the world of my father, and that codependency.
So, just recently, I snapped back into all that, learned what I'd been
missing all those years: and it was the same thing I'd known most of my
growing up. What you'll see on the screen is me connecting, because
that's what you always see with actors (when it's working). What you
won't see is the off camera terror: the masochistic politeness to the
people in charge, the endless tolerance of extreme abuse. Do you know
that when I was a kid we were instructed to take the coats of
directors, producers, and casting directors - as if we were the wives
and hostesses at cocktail parties. (I hadn't thought of that in many
years.) But the really sick part of it is how well it works. You follow
this protocol and even with only the most basic level of talent and you
will rapidly advance to the 5% club. 250 kids/people trying out? You'll
be one of the 25 who get a call back. You may not get the part, but you
may. And you know how you're going to be seen by the men behind things?
As someone - even if you're a child - willing to do...anything...to get
the part. They will act accordingly, because that's what people do.
This is supposed to be a PSA, which is to say I guess I'm supposed to
have some kind of wisdom about this (i.e. how to do this without it
being that), but I don't; this is what I'm in therapy for - the hope
that it can be different, that I can learn how to make it so. All I can
say is you wouldn't want to turn out your 8 year old child, would you?
But here's the thing about acting: Orson Welles always said it was
fundamentally feminine, if not homosexual. I agree completely. But
going to that place - my feminine side (like my inner child) is cis, a
boy - is like being hit on as a barely legal by an older man. If the
stars align darkly, a part of you might like the attention, like being
noticed. But if you go through with it you're also going to feel fear,
intimidation, anger, resentment. You're going to feel controlled, and
want to rebel. And that's the best case scenario - because at least
legally speaking you're an adult. But now imagine having that kind of
experience...as a child. Your vulnerability will be mistaken for
maturity. Your trained deference will be mistaken for a healthy
ambition. And the most f*cked up part about it? The depths of empathy
and capacity for connection - that beautiful and perfect place you go
when you perform - will grow and thrive in a wilderness of moral and
emotional degradation. You wonder why people in this business sometimes
look so sad. That's the reason. In other words, please don't eat the
babies.

starring the singer/actress (Judy
Garland) you all know opens and it’s a hit among critics and
audiences. The premiere in Hollywood (“27th Academy Awards”), which was one of the first to be
broadcast on live TV, was a who’s who list of 1950s Hollywood, The
star, her husband/manager (Sidney
Luft) and the mogul (Jack L.
Warner)
all were smiles and pats on the back before the cameras but behind the
scenes he was already plotting his next move. First off, he had the
movie (which was promoted as a roadshow attraction) severely edited (Production)
after a group of theater owners complained of its length. That pissed
off the actress and her husband. Still holding a grudge against the
husband taking furniture/paintings out of the prop department without
his knowledge and for the actress sending the film’s budget
skyrocketing due to her personal problems causing delays, he hatched a
plan. Knowing that the movie was getting major Oscar buzz, the mogul
did the usual For Your Consideration ads in the trade papers but it was
lukewarm compared to what other studios were putting out for their
films. Sure enough, the film got several nominations including for Best
Actress. As the ceremonies approached, the mogul pulled one of his
flunkies aside and handed him a $100 bill. Hearing rumors that there
might be a tie, he told his flunkie (who was not an AMPAS member) to
pose as an Academy member and cast the tie-breaking vote against the
actress… and don’t let anyone know about it. The deed was done and the
actress lost. Most if not all of the celebrities attending the Oscars
had no idea either, and many who were close friends of the actress were
baffled. Somehow word got to the husband/manager about the rigged vote,
and he hit the ceiling. Not wanting upset his wife, who was going
through severe postpartum depression after giving birth to their son,
he never told her. He first wanted to threaten the mogul by showing up
to his office and threatening him with a pistol, but then he would get
arrested and his name all over the papers. So he called up a friend of
his, who happened to be head of the west coast mob, to get payback on
the mogul. The mobster had the bright idea of sending a pig’s head from
a local butcher shop in a hatbox right to the doorstep of the mogul’s
mansion. In the pig’s mouth was a note that read “To the schvantz, we
know what you did…” As for the flunkie who cast the tiebreaker vote, he
“disappeared”.

- I'd run away after being cast out of the industry, and was living in
a room above a garage in east Hollywood with four other kids, three of
us actors. The place was a hoarder house, owned by this fat pervert who
worked in f/x but was also a crack dealer and purveyor of videos - some
of them featuring us, and kids who had previously squatted there. That
was the price we paid for not sleeping on the streets. And just about
every night, we'd take the bus to Santa Monica Boulevard and rent
ourselves out. I don't like to talk about this episode - even in rehab
and therapy, less because of what happened but because of how it ended
(we robbed a house and got caught). But I know: you want the red meat.
So I'll give you some...in pieces. One of the kids, who was 17 at the
time, and had been one of those very recognizable walk ons from a
number of tv shows but who was by then an addict and dealer, dealt to
this one person who in a few years - three to be exact - would become
famous for his addiction; he was by then already quite famous for his
acting. Also: he would be dead. Those were the few times I met him - he
was already using at the time. The reason I liked him - he'd sometimes
stick around after the sale and get high - is that he didn't look down
on us. In a way I think he saw himself as one of us, or at least as
being like us. I mean, if I'm not mistaken, the mother had literally
sent him and his siblings out on street corners to perform. He was
always drinking a Coke, and smoking a Camel. One night, with one of the
others, he took the bus too. But I imagine you also want to know who
visited not the apartment but the house. In this one case I don't know
what he was buying - crack or tapes - but I saw him come and go
repeatedly, and I met him one time: let's just say he and the owner
were...watching tv. This person himself had been an actor coming up,
and had been fired by the big dog himself after a mother complained.
Let's just say that even if it had happened later - when the one aspect
of it was legalized - it would not have been a misdemeanor under
California state law.

this one - at least until his death - because Enty has a policy of not
outing people, and also because I'm not absolutely sure he was ever at
the House: the one kid who saw him said "well, it sure looked like
him." (Psst: I now think it was.) And yes: this is someone extremely
big, and not at all known or suspected to prefer people of his own sex,
or both sexes, let alone minors; he's also quite old now. (But of
course even if it was him he may not have been there for the tapes but
the drugs. The thing is he was never known for that either.) What made
me remember all this was that in recent years one of his former female
co-stars (who clearly knew him well and over time) made a really
stunning statement about him that when you think of it kind of implies
that. Also and re: the legendary actor in Part 2: I was introduced to
one of the guys he had seen regularly in the late 1970s a few years
later by the now late journalist Steve Silberman - kid was 15 at the
time he was his john, and a runaway too - and he told me that the actor
used to make him ride in the trunk of his Rolls, sometimes forcing him
there at gunpoint. Said journalist also introduced me to a very famous
writer - one whose summer camp of sorts he'd attended (ie the one which
basically existed for his access to barely legal boys); I'd
strangely/coincidentally been hit on by this person a month or two
prior. He had this 18 or 19 year old assistant who told you what he
wanted/how to dress (ie a school uniform - I had to have my mother send
me mine, and I guess he thought I was still in high school because it
was real). And in the end he wouldn't pay me the 200 bucks we'd agreed
to (that was my celebrity/obviously rich person rate) - I got 125
bucks, and I still have a copy of the check (I'll post it when I clean
out the garage for my move back to LA this coming year - it was from
his foundation or whatever). (He was into weird sh*t - bdsm and
medical stuff. His spare bedroom had a bunk bed he would restrain you
to - all I could think of was being back in the hospital, but I figured
this person was too famous to murder me or something - but that wasn't

that most iconic mid-century sit com boy - he claimed to have swam

stay and hang out he said: "No offense you guys, but if I'm not

Our director, however, used this as an opportunity to call up every
modeling agency in his country and conduct hundreds of nude auditions,

The Naturists - A Dancing Boy Story: That isn't the title either, but
it's also not dissimilar. You see: I was made to perform naked before I
could even dress myself - I was three years old. My mother had retired
me more than a year earlier - after a production assistant had tried to
soothe my teething self by rubbing cocaine on my gums during the
filming of a diaper ad - but what I didn't say before was that at age 2
she had left me unattended on the second floor landing, and that I'd
fallen through the railing and broken my arm; I very easily could have
been killed. The ER doc was prepared to call CPS, but my father talked
him out of it. For him it was...an opportunity. By then we were living
in the Bay Area (not yet So Cal), and he was working at the hq of a
certain network-owned retailer (think: Ron the stereo salesman). And of
course much of what he thought about with respect to me was getting me
back into the game. Here was his chance to guilt his way there. And so,
at age 3, I appeared on the beloved regional version of the
longstanding children's show - the one with actual children. My father
led them to believe I was a literary prodigy - that I could read and
write at this age, and that I would do so on air. What I really
possessed was just a precocious ability to memorize, which I did.
Apparently the adults were impressed. I remember only drinking Hawaiian
Punch in the green room. But that wasn't the end of it. One of the
hippies who worked with my dad moonlighted as a producer - I think they
were mostly adult films. But of course even in the nudie/porny 70s if
you wanted to film unclothed children you needed some kind of plausible
deniability, which is to say I was made to appear in a documentary
about "nudist families." (I only place the subject matter in quotes
because those people were not my family - some of the others may have
been. But I remember that the overwhelming number of people in the
scenes I was in were children, mostly boys.) This person was a sometime
guest of the unit head (who had founded the company before it was
bought) on his weekly yacht parties in the bay. But unlike that person,
who surrounded himself with busty young women, this person always had a
cadre of young boys in swim briefs around him. I became one of them.
And you can guess what almost happened. (It was actually my mother and
another one of the wives who walked in on him abusing another boy in
one of the cabins.) Said person was literally thrown overboard and
fired by the unit head several hundred feet from shore. But that wasn't
the end of the movies. What happened was that my mother - obviously
furious about the near abuse - wanted my father to call New York about
it. Instead my father got...a concession, which is to say I then
appeared in an ad for the chain, dancing in a living room set with
headphones on. This is the first time I was made to dance in my
underpants. (If you lived in a place one of the stores was at the time,
you probably saw it.) At three, you have little concept of modesty - at
four, not so much. By now my father really had called New York at my
mother's behest. (The final straw was the holiday party getting kicked
out of the top of the Transamerica Pyramid because nearly everyone
other than my parents was coked up and on acid, and having sex with
each other.) The unit head fired my father, and he was promptly rehired
by the chairman and promoted to executive - that's why we moved to LA.
(My mother was furious - she blamed my father for having this secret
plot for us to move to LA so that he could try to get me in Hollywood.
Obviously, it was her doing.) The party life continued for my parents
and the people they knew at the network and in the business - including
this one producer, whose "family" parties we often went to. (I have
only a vague recollection of this, but let's just say the
child-friendly looking sweets and punch were not, including at
officially sanctioned events - the network doctor was called when the
kids consumed some, not unlike a mob doc. On at least one occasion that
kid was me.) And guess what this producer wanted to make a sequel to?
This time I had to be bribed into doing it: I got to see Star Wars at
the Chinese Theater. There was a trip to Disney, and another one to the
San Diego Zoo. (It first occurred to me as a teen - after so much else
had happened - that literally thousands of adults may have j***** o**
to my unclothed, four year old self. I nearly threw up.) But I wouldn't
do the third - that was when I quit acting, and modeling. My father
punished me in a way you'll see described in the first production - it
involved that same state of undress. And yes: less than a year later I
was sent to acting class after staging a candy run in kindergarten. (I
was also btw diagnosed with "hyperkinetic reaction of childhood" - a
diagnosis I could never remember or pronounce - and put on meds; this
is what they'd eventually call ADHD. And by the middle of grade school
it was the school nurse who dispensed them - I'd taken to stealing
extra ones for stage fright, so I wasn't trusted with them at home.) It
all began...again.
